Paiute Orchardgrass Seed (lb)

Paiute Orchardgrass is a perennial bunchgrass selected for reliable establishment on dry sites and strong performance at higher elevations. Compared with orchardgrass types developed primarily for irrigated pasture, Paiute is better suited to limited-moisture settings where persistence, erosion control, and usable forage matter more than maximum lush growth.

Dactylis glomerata adapts to several soil types but performs especially well in clay and loam. Seedlings have good early vigor, an important trait where rainfall is limited and competition from established vegetation can be intense. Plant height responds to moisture: stands may remain around 18 inches under dryland conditions but can reach 4½–5 feet when irrigation or dependable rainfall is available.

Prepare a firm, weed-controlled seedbed and provide moisture during germination and early establishment. Mature plants are drought tolerant, but newly emerging seedlings still need dependable moisture to develop their root systems. Once established, manage grazing or mowing so the bunches retain enough leaf area for recovery. Paiute is a grass rather than a legume and needs no Rhizobium inoculant.
