Purple Tomatillos - Sweeter Flavor Than the Green
Tomatillo - Purple - Physalis ixocarpa
Annual Heirloom. Rare variety, smaller 1" fruit has sweeter flavor than green tomatillo. Makes attractive purple salsa. Easy to grow, less sticky.
Did You Know? Grow tomatillos like you would tomatoes, though they do not require staking and are more resistant to pests and diseases. They are the main ingredient in salsa verde and other Mexican dishes.
Soil & Water: Tomatillos love fertile soil rich in organic matter. Add plenty of compost prior to planting. Soil pH is preferred between 5.5-7.0. Soak the soil 4-6" deep at 7-day intervals. Mulch to preserve moisture. Avoid wetting the foliage when watering.
Planting & Growing: Sow seeds in flats 6-8 weeks before the last frost and thin to 2" apart after the first true leaves appear. Before transplanting after the last frost, harden off the plants by placing them outdoors for a few hours to start, increasing the amount of time each day until they are accustomed to a full day of sunlight. Once transplanted, provide full sun, except in hot climates where some afternoon shade is recommended.
Harvesting & Storage: Harvest individual fruits when the husk begins to split or the fruit fills out the husk.
Soil Temperature: 70-80°F
Planting Depth: 1/4"
Germination: 7-14 Days
Height At Maturity: 3'-4'
Days To Maturity: 68 -70 Days

Planted 4 plants and spaced them as much as tomatoes. They got around 8 hours per day of sunlight, pruned them lightly, watered regularly. These are not purple. I don't even know what stage to even pick them it's been 5 months, much past "68-70 day to maturity" an the ripest they get is a yellowish tint to the green. They also taste bitter and horrible. Ground cherries are similar and I grew a bunch of those this year. Not problems with them ripening and tasting amazing. Maybe I got a bad batch. idk
We love Tomatillos and they grow like weeds. We like them fresh in salads and salsas as well as cooked with protein dishes.
The purple strains are so attractive in any dish . . . Peaceful Valley's seeds are fresh and highly viable.
I start most of my veggies indoors, but Tomatillo seedlings are very fragile and I find direct sowing to be a better way to grow them.
I got nearly 100% germination from the packet I bought right here.
BTW: Do you love beefsteak sized heirloom style Tomatoes but live in the foggy coastal regions of California where only cherry and pear tomatoes grow well?
Lobby our friends here at Peaceful Valley to trial and distribute my new introduction: "San Francisco Sunrise".
Too late this season (it is the end of May 2021 as I write this) for you to start seedlings but search eBay for photos and the full story!
