Peaceful Valley Sod Buster Mix - Seed (lb)
Break Up Compacted Soils
Peaceful Valley Sod Buster Mix approaches compacted ground with several kinds of roots rather than a single crop. Triticale and ryegrain produce dense networks of fine, fibrous roots through the upper soil profile. Nemfix Mustard sends down a thicker taproot, while Bell Beans, Biomaster Peas, and Common Vetch add legume roots and nitrogen-rich growth. Together, the species occupy more of the soil than a uniform stand.
This cool-season blend is intended for heavy ground that needs living roots, winter coverage, and substantial plant residue. The cereals provide early soil protection and carbon-rich biomass; the legumes support nitrogen fixation; and the mustard contributes a broadleaf growth habit and deeper rooting. The varied canopy also competes with weeds while protecting the soil surface from rainfall and erosion.
Plant in fall so the components have time to establish before winter. Because the mix contains raw legume seed, inoculate it immediately before planting. Root growth can help create channels and improve soil structure over time, but a cover crop is not a substitute for correcting severe drainage, traffic, or hardpan problems. For green manure, terminate before mature seed develops and while the stand remains manageable. Allow thick cereal residue time to begin decomposing before planting the following crop.
- Season: Cool-season annual multi-species cover crop mixture
- Contains: Triticale, Ryegrain, Nemfix Mustard, Bell Beans, Biomaster Peas, and Common Vetch
- Application Rate: 1–2 lb per 1,000 sq ft or 50–60 lb per acre
- Inoculant: Strongly recommended for effective nodulation and nitrogen fixation. Use Pea Vetch Lentil Inoculant (treats 100 lb), Garden Combination Mix Inoculant (treats 8 lb), or Garden Combination Mix Inoculant (treats 50 lb). Choose the package size that matches the amount of seed being planted, and plant promptly after treating the seed.
- Germination: Approximately 5–10 days under suitable conditions
- Plant Height: Approximately 3–5 feet
- Uses: Compacted-soil cover cropping, root-channel development, nitrogen fixation, biomass production, weed competition, and erosion control
- Planting Window: Fall
- Management: Terminate before mature seed develops and allow incorporated cereal residue time to decompose

Good seeds. Quick delivery.
I use this cover crop in my clay soils to help break things up and allow roots to penetrate deeper.
Tried a new cover crop mix to try and break up my clay soil. And as always, another superior product from peaceful valley!
I've got some garden beds I put in where lawn used to be as well as tree roots. I got this to bust up compaction and build up my soil. It has a great mixture of cover crop seeds designed for just that!
