Basil - Corsican - Ocimum basilicum
Annual
Soil and Water: Basil grows well in moist, rich soil with added organic matter and excellent drainage.
Planting and Growing: Sow indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost or direct sow outdoors after danger of frost is past in pots or in warm soil. Pinch out the tips to encourage bushiness, and remove flower stalks so that the plant energy goes into the leaves. Chill-sensitive, does not grow well below 50°F.
Harvesting and Storage: Pick fresh leaves to use at any time or pick and dry when leaves are at their peak for later use. Can also be stored as frozen pesto.
Did You Know? The ancient Greeks and Romans believed basil seeds would only germinate if you cursed and shouted while sowing the seed. For your neighbor's sake we don't recommend this practice.
