Shiitake Hardwood Mushroom Plugs (100 Plugs/pk)

Shiitake Hardwood Mushroom Plugs (100 Plugs/pk)

For Hardwood Log & Stump Cultivation

Plug spawn consists of mushroom mycelium growing on small, spiral-grooved birch dowels. By inoculating stumps or logs, mushrooms can be colonized in the wood. After 9-12 months, the colony is established and mushrooms will spring from cracks in the wood.

Inoculate logs between March and October in the north and year round in the south. Drill 5-16 drill bit holes 2 inches deep in logs or stumps (not in live trees; for best results, use a tree cut at least 2 weeks but no longer than 2 months.) A 3'-4' log uses 50+ plugs, stumps usually hold 30-50 plugs. Each kit comes with 100 plugs.

  • Lentinula edodes
  • These Shiitake Mushroom plugs can be held for 2 weeks at room temperature or up to 4 months in the refrigerator before you inoculate logs.
  • Detailed instructions are included. Follow the instructions exactly or the kit may not perform as expected.

Mushroom plugs are quite simple to insert into logs. Instructions are straightforward.

    As advertised!

I used a kit for a few fresh oak logs about 8 years ago. It took longer than expected (6 plus months) for them to start fruiting. Here is a tip. One of the logs started fruiting like crazy after I accidentally left it soaking and fully submersed in a tub of rain water for a week. I obviously wasn't keeping the logs wet enough. The logs produced sporadically for several years. We can't buy mushrooms this fresh.
