Why Grow Figs?

Figs are one of the easiest fruit trees to grow in your backyard. They thrive in warm climates, but many varieties can tolerate colder temperatures with proper care. Figs are not only delicious but also packed with nutrients like fiber, calcium, and potassium.

Planting Fig Trees

  • Location: Choose a spot with full sun and well-draining soil. Figs prefer a pH between 6.0 and 6.5.
  • Spacing: Space fig trees at least 10-20 feet apart, depending on the variety.
  • Planting Depth: Plant trees at the same depth they were in their nursery container. Avoid planting too deeply.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

Care and Maintenance

  • Watering: Water deeply but infrequently. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
  • Fertilizing: Use a balanced organic fertilizer like Fruit Tree Fertilizer once or twice a year.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove dead or crossing branches and to shape the tree.
  • Cold Protection: In colder regions, wrap the tree or move container-grown figs to a sheltered location during winter.

Harvesting Figs

Figs are ready to harvest when they are soft to the touch and their stems begin to droop. Harvest figs gently, as they bruise easily. Enjoy fresh figs immediately or preserve them by drying or making fig jam.

Pest and Disease Management

Figs are relatively pest-resistant but can occasionally attract fig beetles, aphids, or nematodes. Monitor your trees regularly and use organic pest control methods like neem oil if needed.
