How to Grow Avocados

Why Grow Avocados?

Avocados are a versatile and nutritious fruit that you can grow in your own backyard if you live in a warm-weather or mild-winter climate. Packed with healthy fats and vitamins, they are a rewarding addition to any garden.

Choosing the Right Location

Avocados thrive in full sun with well-drained soil. Select a south or southwestern exposure and plant at least 8-10 feet away from structures. A soil test is highly recommended, especially to check pH levels, as avocados do not tolerate soil with a pH higher than 7.

Planting Your Avocado Tree

Follow these steps to plant your avocado tree:

  • Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and about as wide as the pot.
  • Carefully cut away the container to avoid disturbing the roots.
  • Place the tree in the hole gently and backfill the soil around it.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.

Watering and Mulching

Avocado trees are shallow-rooted and benefit from regular watering. Young trees may need 5-20 gallons of water a few times a week, while mature trees can go longer between waterings. Avoid waterlogging and let the soil dry slightly between waterings. Mulch with the tree’s own leaves or a weed mat to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Protecting and Maintaining Your Tree

Avocado trees need some additional care to thrive:

  • Sunburn Protection: Use a white tree guard or a 50/50 mix of white interior latex paint and water to prevent trunk sunburn.
  • Pruning: Pinch back growing tips to maintain a manageable size instead of heavy pruning.
  • Fertilization: Use a citrus, fruit tree, or avocado-specific fertilizer monthly to promote healthy growth and cold hardiness.

Pollination and Planting Multiple Trees

Avocado trees have "A" and "B" flower types that complement each other for better fruit production. Planting one of each type, like Mexicola (A) and Zutano (B), will increase your yield. Space them 20-30 feet apart.

Harvesting Avocados

Avocados do not ripen on the tree. Test ripeness by picking a few fruits and letting them ripen indoors at 65-70°F. If they soften within two weeks, the fruit is ripe. Use a pole picker like the Pole Fruit Picker for higher branches. Harvest gradually, as avocados hold well on the tree.
