Why Seed Quality Matters to Us

At Peaceful Valley, we know that a packet or bag of seed can become much more than a product. It may become food for a family, a productive farm or garden, flowers planted to provide forage and habitat for pollinators, or simply something beautiful to enjoy. That is why seed quality, freshness, accurate labeling, and careful handling matter to us.

We use germination testing, inventory controls, dating standards, lot information, and careful handling to help ensure that the seed we offer is supported by current quality information. Seed is a living agricultural product, so germination and garden performance can vary with species, storage, weather, soil, planting depth, moisture, and other growing conditions. Our goal is to provide well-managed seed, clear information, and a strong foundation for successful planting.

What Germination Testing Means

Germination testing helps describe the quality of a particular seed lot at the time it is tested. In a controlled test, a representative sample is placed under conditions appropriate for that kind of seed and the percentage that produces normal seedlings is measured. The result gives customers and seed sellers a useful way to understand the condition of the lot, but it is not a guarantee of field or garden emergence.

There is no single germination percentage that defines good seed for every plant. Germination characteristics and applicable standards can vary widely among vegetables, herbs, grasses, legumes, grains, cover crops, flowers, and other seed types. A percentage that would be unusually low for one crop may be normal or acceptable for another. Some species may also have hard seed or dormant seed reported separately from germination, which can provide additional information about the lot.

For seed regulated under California law, Peaceful Valley follows the applicable requirements of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) Seed Services Program. California establishes specific labeling and testing requirements by seed type and use, including minimum germination standards for many vegetable seeds and required germination information for agricultural seed. We use those applicable requirements rather than expecting every species to reach the same percentage.

Because seed is a living agricultural product, test dates and sell-by dates are quality-assurance and regulatory tools. They are not a statement that seed suddenly becomes nonviable on a particular day. Depending on the species and storage conditions, properly stored seed may remain viable beyond a labeled dating period.

Organic and Conventional Seed

Germination testing and seed-labeling requirements are separate from whether a seed lot is organic or conventional. Organic certification addresses how seed is produced, handled, and represented as organic. Germination, purity, lot identification, and other seed-quality requirements address the identity and condition of the seed itself.

That means an organic seed lot and a conventional seed lot may be subject to the same applicable germination and labeling requirements based on the type of seed and how it is sold or used. We care about seed quality across both organic and conventional varieties.

Peaceful Valley Vegetable & Herb Seed Packets

Peaceful Valley vegetable seed, and herb seed classified as vegetable seed under applicable California seed regulations, is handled in accordance with CDFA seed requirements.

For regulated seed sold at retail, California generally limits the applicable germination test or viability-assurance period to 15 months. Depending on the seed type and package size, labeling may use a germination test date with a SELL BY or USE BEFORE date, or an allowed seasonal packing statement.

The date on the packet is primarily a regulatory and quality-assurance date, not a biological expiration date. Properly stored seeds may remain viable beyond that period. Peaceful Valley does not sell or ship our regulated seed after the applicable sell-by, use-before, packed-for, or testing period has passed unless the lot has been properly retested and relabeled as permitted.

Peaceful Valley Flower & Wildflower Seed

California does not apply the same California Seed Law dating requirements to flower seed. Peaceful Valley nevertheless applies a voluntary freshness standard to Peaceful Valley-labeled flower and wildflower seed because we believe customers should have a clear and consistent quality standard.

We use a maximum period of 15 months from the most recent germination test as our internal quality-control standard. A flower or wildflower seed lot remaining in inventory beyond that period is removed from sale unless it is retested and approved for continued sale.

Seed longevity varies significantly by species and storage conditions, and flower seed may remain viable considerably longer than 15 months. Our 15-month standard is a quality-control standard, not a statement that the seed becomes nonviable after 15 months.

Cover Crop & Agricultural Seed

Cover crop seed is an important part of our seed program and is commonly used in gardens, farms, orchards, vineyards, pastures, and other growing systems. Under California Seed Law, many cover crop species and mixtures are considered agricultural seed.

Peaceful Valley is authorized to sell seed in California, and we handle the cover crop seed we offer in accordance with applicable CDFA requirements for agricultural seed. Those requirements help ensure that germination information and other required quality information remain current and useful to customers.

As with other seed types, germination standards vary by species. Grasses, legumes, grains, and other cover crop species should be evaluated according to the standards that apply to that kind of seed rather than against a single universal germination percentage.

For agricultural seed offered at retail, California generally requires the germination test to be current within 15 months. Seed may remain viable beyond that period, but a current test is part of the regulatory and quality-control framework for offering it for sale.

Other Seed Brands

Seed from other brands may use a sell-by date, use-before date, packed-for season, germination test date, or another vendor dating system. We follow the applicable date and labeling on the package and do not sell or ship seed after a printed sell-by or expiration date.
