Why Seed Quality Matters to Us

At Peaceful Valley, we know a packet or bag of seed can become much more than a "product." It may become food for a family, part of a farm’s livelihood, flowers planted to provide forage and habitat for pollinators, or simply something beautiful to grow and enjoy. That is why seed quality, freshness, accurate labeling, and careful handling matter to us.

We use germination testing, inventory controls, dating standards, lot information, and careful handling to help ensure that the seed we offer is supported by current quality information. Seed is a living agricultural product, so germination and garden performance can vary with species, storage, weather, soil, planting depth, moisture, and other growing conditions. Our goal is to provide well-managed seed, clear information, and a strong foundation for successful planting.

What Germination Testing Means

Germination testing gives us useful information about the quality of a particular seed lot at the time it is tested. In a controlled test, a representative sample is placed under conditions appropriate for that kind of seed, and the percentage that produces normal seedlings is measured. It is a helpful measure of seed quality, but it does not guarantee what will happen in every garden or field.

No single germination percentage defines good seed for every plant. Germination characteristics and applicable standards can vary widely among vegetables, herbs, grasses, legumes, grains, cover crops, flowers, and other seed types. A percentage that might seem low for one crop may be completely normal or acceptable for another. Some species may also have hard seed or dormant seed reported separately, providing additional information about the lot.

For seed regulated under California law, Peaceful Valley follows the applicable requirements of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) Seed Services Program. Those standards vary by seed type and use, including crop-specific minimum germination standards for many vegetable seeds and germination requirements for agricultural seed. Rather than expecting every seed variety to reach the same number, we evaluate it according to the standards that apply to that seed type.

Test dates and sell-by dates help us manage seed quality, freshness, and regulatory requirements. They do not mean that seed suddenly becomes nonviable on a particular day. Depending on the species and how it has been stored, seed may remain viable well beyond a labeled dating period.

Organic and Conventional Seed

Germination testing and seed-quality requirements are separate from whether a seed lot is organic or conventional. Organic certification addresses how seed is produced, handled, and represented as organic, while germination, purity, lot identification, and related requirements provide information about the seed's identity and condition.

Whether our customers choose organic or conventional seed, we apply the same commitment to seed quality. An organic seed lot and a conventional seed lot may be subject to the same germination and labeling requirements based on the type of seed and how it is sold or used.

Peaceful Valley Vegetable & Herb Seed Packets

We handle Peaceful Valley vegetable seed—and herb seed that falls under California’s vegetable-seed requirements—in accordance with applicable CDFA standards.

For regulated seed sold at retail, California generally limits the applicable germination test or viability-assurance period to 15 months. Depending on the seed and package, the permitted dating may also take the form of a sell-by date, use-before date, or seasonal packing statement.

These dates are primarily quality-assurance and regulatory tools, not biological expiration dates. Properly stored seed may remain viable beyond the applicable dating period. We do not sell or ship our regulated seed after the applicable testing or dating period has passed unless the lot has been properly retested and relabeled as permitted.

Peaceful Valley Flower & Wildflower Seed

California does not apply the same California Seed Law dating requirements to flower seed. Even so, we believe our customers deserve a clear and consistent standard for the flower and wildflower seed we offer under the Peaceful Valley name.

We use a maximum period of 15 months from the most recent germination test as our internal quality-control standard. When a flower or wildflower seed lot reaches that point, we remove it from sale unless it is retested and approved for continued sale.

Many flower seeds can remain viable well beyond 15 months, depending on the species and storage conditions. Our 15-month standard is about how we manage freshness and quality—not a statement that the seed stops being viable after 15 months.

Cover Crop & Agricultural Seed

Cover crop seed is an important part of our seed program and is used by home gardeners, farms, orchards, vineyards, pastures, and other growing operations. Under California Seed Law, many cover crop species and mixtures are considered agricultural seed.

Peaceful Valley is authorized to sell seed in California, and we handle the cover crop seed we offer in accordance with applicable CDFA requirements for agricultural seed. These requirements help keep germination and other required quality information current and useful to our customers.

As with other types of seed, germination expectations vary by species. Grasses, legumes, grains, and other cover crop species should be evaluated according to the standards appropriate to that kind of seed rather than compared with one universal germination percentage.

For agricultural seed offered at retail, California generally requires the germination test to be current within 15 months. Seed may remain viable beyond that period, but current testing helps us provide customers with timely information about the seed they are purchasing.

Seeds from Other Quality Growers & Suppliers

We’re proud to carry seeds from other quality growers and trusted seed suppliers alongside our Peaceful Valley offerings. These growers and suppliers may use different dating systems, including sell-by dates, use-before dates, packed-for seasons, germination test dates, or other quality-control standards appropriate to the seed they provide.

We respect those systems and the applicable requirements, and we review seed dating as part of our own inventory and quality-control practices. Our goal is to offer customers seed that is current, clearly identified, and supported by useful quality information. We do not sell or ship seed after a printed sell-by or expiration date.
