How to Choose a Dragon Fruit Cutting

  • Pollination: Self-compatibility varies by cultivar. Several dragon fruit selections need pollen from a genetically different cultivar, and hand pollination can improve reliability. Follow the guidance on each product page.
  • Climate: Dragon fruit is a tropical to subtropical climbing cactus. Protect it from frost and prolonged freezing conditions, and acclimate new growth gradually where intense sun can cause injury.
  • Support: Plan for a sturdy trellis, post or other structure that can carry a mature branching cactus.
  • Rooting and drainage: Plant cuttings according to the product instructions in a fast-draining medium. Avoid prolonged saturation while roots establish.

Growing Dragon Fruit

Provide warmth, bright light, airflow and stable support. Water according to weather, container size and root development, allowing the medium to drain. Flowering and first-fruit timing vary with cultivar, cutting maturity, climate, nutrition and pollination, so they should not be treated as guaranteed schedules.
