How to Raise Backyard Chickens for Fresh Organic Eggs

Raising backyard chickens is a rewarding way to enjoy fresh eggs and connect with sustainable living. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or new to organic practices, these tips will help you create a healthy and productive environment for your feathered friends.

Creating a Safe Chicken Coop
A secure coop is essential to protect chickens from predators. Opt for pre-built coops or build your own using durable materials. Cover windows with hardware cloth and secure doors with predator-proof latches. If you're not ready for a permanent coop, consider portable options for flexibility.

Coop Essentials

  • Nesting Boxes: Provide one box per five hens for a comfortable space to lay eggs.
  • Roosting Bars: Use 1.5-inch rounded bars, allowing 10 linear inches per hen. Place a removable tray under the bars to collect manure for composting.
  • Cleaning Access: Design the coop with easy-to-clean features, like a mesh floor with a removable tray.

Feeding Your Chickens
A well-balanced organic layer feed ensures hens get the necessary protein, calcium, fiber, and vitamins. Supplement their diet with ground oyster shells for extra calcium. Avoid feeding chickens citrus, onions, or garlic, as these can affect egg flavor. Planting an Omega-3 Chicken Forage Blend enhances egg nutrition by increasing omega-3 fatty acids.

Water and Lighting
Provide fresh water year-round, using an automatic waterer or regular cleaning. During winter, supplement daylight with a 40-60 watt bulb to maintain 14 hours of light, ensuring consistent egg production.

Choosing Your Chickens
Start with at least two chickens, as they are social creatures. Pullets (4-month-old chickens) are ideal for immediate egg production, while chicks require more care and specialized equipment.

Enjoy Fresh Eggs
Hens begin laying eggs at 18-20 weeks old and can produce one egg per day until they’re around four years old. Properly refrigerated, your eggs can last up to three months.

Raise backyard chickens, enjoy fresh omega-3-rich eggs, and experience the joys of organic living!
