Epazote Seeds (Organic)

Source of a Potent Spice

Epazote (Dysphania ambrosioides, formerly Chenopodium ambrosioides), also known as Mexican tea or wormseed, is a unique perennial herb native to Central and South America. This aromatic, wormwood-like plant has been a staple in traditional Mexican and Central American cooking for centuries. Known for its bold, pungent flavor, organic epazote is prized for enhancing bean dishes, especially black beans, and is traditionally believed to help reduce gas-causing compounds during cooking.

Note: Epazote (wormseed) was formerly classified as Chenopodium ambrosioides, but is now correctly identified as Dysphania ambrosioides based on updated botanical taxonomy. Both names refer to the same plant.

Growing Information

  • Botanical Name: Dysphania ambrosioides
  • Plant Type: Tender perennial (often grown as annual in colder zones)
  • Sun Requirements: Prefers full sun
  • Soil Preference: Plant prefers sandy or well-drained soil and tolerates poor or disturbed soils
  • Sowing Method: Strew seeds on the soil surface and keep moist; do not cover seeds as they require light to germinate
  • Germination Time: About 7 days
  • Spacing: 12–24 inches apart
  • Height at Maturity: Up to 4 feet tall
  • Certified Organic: Yes
  • Approximate Seeds per Pack: 300

Once established, epazote is a low-maintenance herb that can self-seed, providing a recurring harvest of fresh leaves season after season.

Culinary Uses

  • Essential in traditional Mexican soups, stews, quesadillas, and other dishes
  • Commonly added to bean dishes, especially black beans, to enhance flavor and aid digestion
  • Use sparingly — its strong, resinous taste means a little goes a long way
  • Best harvested for cooking when using fresh leaves
