Improved Meyer Lemon Tree (Potted)

Improved Meyer Lemon Tree (Potted)

Best Lemon to Grow in a Container

Popular home garden citrus. Brought from China in 1908 by Frank Meyer, it is likely a hybrid of lemon and orange or mandarin. "Improved" refers to the California state tested, virus-free clone, a collaborative discovery of Joe Grimshaw and Floyd Dillon in the early 1950's. Trees are more compact than true lemons and are ideal for pots and container growing, indoors or outside. Prefers full soon and good drainage. Often two bloom cycles, spring and fall, providing fruit much of the year. Mature fruit takes on a golden hue.

Less acidic than Eureka or Lisbon lemon, with a softer rind. Unique flavor versatile for many uses, including desserts, salad dressing, and marinades.

  • Size: Semi-Dwarf Meyer Lemon Tree (Potted)
  • USDA Zones: 9-10 (grow in containers in other zones)
  • Protect Below: 32°F
  • Harvest Time: Fall-Spring

About Our Citrus

Add a little zest to your garden! Citrus trees are potted, evergreen, semi-dwarf, 12-18 months-old, pencil caliper, 12”-18” tall measured from the bottom of the pot to the top of the tree. They will, with good care, produce fragrant, self-pollinating flowers and wonderful fruit. Mature height is 8’–12’, but can be pruned to suit in ground or in containers.

Choose a sunny location, in well drained soil, sheltered from wind. They are affected by freezing temperatures, and in many locales require frost protection. Trees should start to produce fruit around the third year.
