Forage Grass with Good Heat and Cold Tolerance
Festulolium (rye fescue) is a relatively new forage grass developed by crossing a fescue (meadow fescue or tall fescue) with a ryegrass (perennial or Italian). We offer the Perun variety, which is a cross of 80% Italian Ryegrass with 20% Meadow Fescue. The cross combines the cold resistance and drought tolerance of the meadow fescue with the rapid establishment, good spring growth and palatability of the Italian ryegrass. The instructions for this grass says to use 1 lb for every 1000 sq ft. We did this, plus a little more, and the grass is coming in a little thin. Hopefully it will fill in more over time because, at this point, we are planning on using more grass mixed with extra soil to actually have a full lawn. Otherwise, the price was great and the product seems of high quality. It is difficult to find organic grass seed suitable for our needs so it was nice to find this fescue mix. I would recommend this product to others.
This is really great grass for our high desert backyard. We water frequently but have a tough shady spot on the north side that can't sustain most grasses but this one works great. We reseed every year to keep it thick and weed free. It grows well with clover in our HOT and dry climate with irrigation. Great green and it looks really nice if we forget to mow it, kind of like a prarie grass.
