What you need before you begin
- Your average last spring freeze date for spring and summer crops.
- Your average first fall freeze date for fall planting and harvest planning.
- The seed packets or crop notes for the varieties you plan to grow.
- A calendar for marking sowing, potting-up, hardening, and transplant tasks.
Step 1: Find representative freeze dates
Choose a weather station near the garden and at a similar elevation when possible. Regional averages are useful, but a low spot, hillside, coastal influence, or urban heat can make one garden meaningfully different from another. If you have several years of garden notes, compare them with the published average and use the date that best represents your site.
A freeze date is not a promise that freezing weather will end or begin on that exact day. It is a planning reference. Keep watching the forecast as transplanting approaches.
Step 2: Enter the dates in the calculator
Open the calculator and enter the requested spring and fall dates. The tool works backward or forward from those dates to display estimated windows for indoor sowing, direct sowing, and transplanting.
Use the location where the crop will actually grow. If you garden in more than one climate—such as a warm valley plot and a cooler mountain garden—run the calculator separately for each site.
Step 3: Match the results to the seed packet
The calculator provides a general crop schedule. Your packet provides variety-specific information, including days to maturity, sowing depth, spacing, and whether the variety is normally transplanted or direct sown. When the two sources differ, use the packet and local experience to make the final decision.
Also consider the crop’s growth rate. Starting a fast-growing squash too early may produce an oversized plant before outdoor conditions are suitable. Peppers, onions, and some flowers may need a longer indoor period.
Step 4: Turn each window into a task list
Mark more than the first sowing date. A useful schedule includes:
- Preparation: check seed supply, clean trays, and obtain starting mix.
- Sowing: label containers with crop, variety, and date.
- Germination check: monitor temperature and moisture daily.
- Light: move emerged seedlings under suitable light immediately.
- Potting up: allow time if long-season seedlings will outgrow their first cells.
- Hardening: begin gradual outdoor exposure before transplanting.
- Transplanting or direct sowing: confirm the current forecast and soil conditions.
Step 5: Adjust for weather, soil, and succession planting
A warm spell does not necessarily mean tender crops should be planted early, and a cold wet spring may delay soil preparation. For transplants, review soil-temperature guidance. For direct-sown crops, confirm that the seedbed can be worked without compaction and that the soil is within the crop’s useful germination range.
For crops that can be sown repeatedly, use the calculator’s range as the first window and schedule additional sowings based on packet guidance, space, and expected harvest. Stop when later plantings are unlikely to mature before heat, cold, or day length becomes limiting.
Common planning mistakes
- Starting every crop on the same day: crops differ widely in germination and transplant timing.
- Starting too early: older is not always better; crowded, root-bound seedlings can be harder to establish.
- Ignoring the variety: maturity and transplant recommendations can vary within the same crop.
- Skipping hardening off: indoor seedlings need a gradual transition to sun, wind, and temperature changes.
