Grafting Fruit Trees with Dave Wilson Nursery

Learn the T-budding technique used by Dave Wilson Nursery to grow healthy and productive fruit trees!

The Grafting Process

Grafting is a horticultural technique that joins two plants into one, combining the rootstock of one with the scion (bud) of another. This method is widely used in fruit tree production to ensure vigor, disease resistance, and high yields.

Steps in the Grafting Process

  • Planting Rootstock: Mazzard rootstock is planted to grow full-size cherry trees.
  • T-Budding Technique: A T-shaped cut is made into the bark of the rootstock during the fall. A single bud from a bud stick is inserted into the cut and secured with budding tape.
  • Dormancy and Growth: The bud remains dormant over winter. In spring, it begins to grow, and the rootstock above the bud is removed to focus energy on the new growth.
  • Training for Straight Growth: As the bud grows, a grow-straight guide is used to ensure the tree develops straight and upright.

Why Choose Grafted Fruit Trees?

Grafted trees are a preferred choice for their ability to combine the best traits of different plant varieties. Rootstocks provide disease resistance and adaptability, while scions ensure high-quality fruit production. This combination leads to stronger, more productive trees tailored to specific growing conditions.
