DIY Pallet Garden

In this video, Autumn shows you how to create your own pallet garden, a perfect option for small spaces!

Transform a Pallet into a Small Space Garden

If you’re short on gardening space, a pallet garden can be a creative and efficient solution. With a few materials and some organic gardening know-how, you can transform a simple pallet into a thriving vertical garden perfect for flowers, herbs, and even strawberries.

Materials Needed

  • Weed fabric or landscape fabric
  • Staple gun
  • Six-packs of plants (such as flowers, herbs, or strawberries)
  • Organic potting soil

Step 1: Prepare the Pallet

Choose a pallet in good condition. Smaller local retailers often have pallets they’re happy to give away. Lay the pallet flat and stretch the weed fabric over the back to contain the soil. Fold the edges of the fabric to prevent unraveling and staple it securely along three sides, leaving the top open for planting. Don’t forget to staple the fabric to the crossbar on the back for added stability.

Step 2: Plant the Top

Begin by planting along the top of the pallet. Cram the plants tightly together to create a solid seal that prevents soil from escaping. This tight planting also encourages a lush, full garden.

Step 3: Fill with Soil

Fill the pallet with organic potting soil and use a broom to sweep it into the cracks. Once the soil is in place, you’re ready to plant along the face of the pallet.

Step 4: Plant the Face

For every hole in the pallet, plant about one six-pack of flowers or herbs. Allisum is an excellent choice for attracting beneficial insects, and strawberries are a fun addition, especially for families with kids.

Step 5: Let it Root and Grow

Allow the pallet garden to lay horizontally for a few weeks while the plants root in securely. Once established, stand the pallet upright. Consider planting peas or beans along the top to grow vertically on a nearby fence. Keep the pallet well-watered, as it tends to dry out faster than other containers.

Creating a pallet garden is a fun and sustainable way to maximize your small space. With a little care and creativity, you’ll enjoy a thriving garden that’s as functional as it is beautiful. Grow organic for life!
