Transform a Pallet into a Garden and Playhouse
If you're short on space and want to add creativity to your garden, a pallet garden that doubles as a playhouse is a perfect solution. This project combines sustainability and fun, giving you a functional garden and a charming retreat for kids.
Materials Needed
For the pallet garden:
- Weed fabric or landscape fabric
- Staple gun
- Six-packs of plants (like flowers or strawberries)
- Organic potting soil
For the playhouse:
- Five seven-foot bamboo poles
- Tension straps
- Nails or screws
- Hammer or screw gun
- Decorative items like burlap, curtains, ribbons, or trellising
Building the Pallet Garden
Start by selecting a pallet and securing weed fabric to the back to contain the potting soil. Staple the fabric around three sides, leaving the top open for planting. Ensure the fabric is also secured to the crossbar for added stability. Once ready, fill the pallet with potting soil, sweeping it into the cracks with a broom.
Plant flowers like allisum to attract beneficial insects or fun edibles like strawberries for the kids. Let the pallet lay horizontally for a few weeks to allow the plants to root.
Creating the Playhouse
Find a level seven-by-four-foot space for the playhouse. Lay down weed fabric and add sand or wood chips for the floor. Use a pallet with tightly packed boards for a sturdy base.
Construct the walls by standing up two pallets and securing a seven-foot bamboo pole between them. Add crossbars with additional bamboo poles, then ratchet the pallets together for stability. For the roof, drape burlap or shade fabric over the bamboo frame and secure the corners with nails or screws.
Enjoy Your Creation
This combination pallet garden and playhouse is a delightful way to maximize space while keeping kids entertained. With just a few materials and a little effort, you’ll have a functional, organic garden and a creative play area. Grow organic for life!
