How to Plant and Maintain Bulbs for Vibrant Spring Blooms

Daffodils, tulips, Dutch iris, and other bulbs are stunning additions to any garden. They’re not only easy to plant but also simple to maintain with proper care and replanting techniques. Here’s a step-by-step guide to planting and dividing bulbs for a garden that bursts with color every spring.

When to Divide Your Bulbs

Bulbs such as daffodils and tulips may need dividing every three to five years. Signs that it’s time to divide include:

  • Excess foliage with few blooms.
  • Empty spots in your plantings.
  • Overcrowded bulb clusters.

Spring and early summer blooming bulbs can be dug up after their foliage browns or before the ground freezes.

How to Dig and Store Bulbs

  1. Digging Up Bulbs: Use a digging fork to gently remove bulbs without cutting them.
  2. Drying Bulbs: Lay the bulbs in a shaded area to dry for a few days. Avoid pulling apart double-nosed bulbs.
  3. Sorting and Storing: Discard diseased or damaged bulbs and compost undersized ones. Store healthy bulbs in mesh sacks at 50–70°F, away from fruits.

Planting Bulbs in Fall

Plant spring and early summer blooming bulbs in the fall when soil temperatures reach around 60°F.

  • Depth: Plant bulbs at a depth three times their height. Large bulbs like tulips need six inches, while smaller ones require two to three inches.
  • Tools: Use a dibbler, bulb planter, or drill auger for compacted soil.
  • Amendments: Add high-phosphorus fertilizer, such as bone meal or sea bird guano, to ensure abundant blooms.

Protecting Your Bulbs

  • Gopher Protection: Use gopher baskets for tulips, which are a favorite snack of these pests.
  • Weed Removal: Clear out perennial weeds to reduce competition for nutrients.

For Mass Plantings

Create a naturalized look by digging large trenches, placing bulbs in clusters, and topping with flower and bulb food. If rainfall is delayed, water the bulbs lightly to encourage growth.

Plant your bulbs this fall to enjoy a garden full of vibrant spring flowers. With these tips, you’ll create a low-maintenance and colorful display that will brighten your outdoor space year after year.
