The Ultimate Guide to Raised Bed Gardening

In this video, Tricia goes over the basics of raised bed gardening and demonstrates some of her favorite raised bed options, including Mini-Farm Boxes, M-Braces and Smart Pots.

Benefits of Raised Bed Gardening

Raised bed gardening is a time-tested technique with numerous benefits. Raised beds offer excellent drainage, quicker soil warming, and often higher productivity. Whether it's a simple mound of soil or a sophisticated redwood frame, raised beds make gardening accessible and efficient. Taller beds, like two-foot-high designs, are ideal for deeper root zones and for gardeners with limited mobility.

Designing Your Raised Beds

For maximum sun exposure, align low-growing crops in a north-south direction, and trellised crops in an east-west direction. Keep your beds away from tree roots and ensure they are in a sunny location. Allow enough space between beds for a wheelbarrow or garden cart, and limit bed width to four feet for easy reach. For longer beds, like the 25-foot design, include support stakes every six feet to maintain structural integrity.

Choosing Materials

Raised beds can be constructed from recycled materials like cinder blocks, bricks, wood, or composite decking. When using wood, avoid those treated with creosote or pentachlorophenol, as they are toxic. Untreated redwood and cedar are durable and safe options. Consider kits like mini farm boxes or decorative garden end braces for easy assembly. For an affordable and portable option, try 300-gallon Smart Pots or Big Bag Beds.

Setting Up Your Raised Bed

Loosen the soil and remove vegetation before installing your bed. For areas with gophers, lay gopher wire beneath the bed, topped with weed fabric. Fill your raised bed with a mix of one part compost, one part perlite, and two parts soil for optimal growth.

Grow Organic Anywhere

Raised beds are perfect for patios, small spaces, and rented homes. With options like Smart Pots and portable mini farm boxes, you can even take your garden with you when you move. Build your raised bed today and enjoy the benefits of organic gardening for life!
