Issai Hardy Kiwi, Male/Female
Cold Hardy Fuzzless Fruit
Issai Hardy Kiwi is a compact, self-fruitful Actinidia arguta vine that produces small, smooth-skinned green fruit with familiar emerald kiwi flesh. The fuzzless fruit can be eaten without peeling and is often sweeter than the larger fuzzy kiwis. Issai was developed in Japan and is especially useful where a gardener wants hardy kiwi fruit but has room for only one potted vine.
- Plant form: Live potted hardy kiwi vine
- USDA Zones: 5–9
- Chill requirement: Approximately 300 hours
- Pollination: Self-fruitful, with male and female flowers on the same plant; a separate male vine is not required
- Fruit: Small, smooth, light-green kiwi with edible skin and green flesh
- Harvest: Source tags indicate late fall; timing varies by climate and season
- Support: Train on a durable trellis, arbor, or wire system
Plant the vine in full sun or the exposure recommended for hardy kiwi in the local climate, using soil that drains well. Set the potted root ball at its existing depth, water thoroughly, and adjust irrigation as roots establish. Install the support immediately; a kiwi vine becomes difficult to manage if it is allowed to sprawl before training begins. Prune during dormancy to manage permanent structure and renew fruiting growth according to the chosen system.
New growth can be tender to frost even though the established vine is cold hardy. Chill accumulation, spring weather, vine age, pruning, and care all influence flowering and harvest. Browse other kiwi vines or review the potted fruit tree and vine collection when comparing space and pollination needs.

We guarantee the perishable items we sell to be in good, viable condition when we sell them. Perishable items include, but are not limited to, garlic bulbs, flower bulbs, seed potatoes, onion sets & transplants, potted or bare root trees, vegetable crowns, etc. If your perishable item arrives in substandard condition, take photographs and please contact us within 3 days of the purchase date (or delivery date) and we will provide you with a refund of the purchase price (excluding shipping costs), or a replacement. Accordingly, we urge you to open any boxes marked as ""Perishable"" immediately upon receiving them and inspect the shipment thoroughly (do not crack open heads of garlic, we do not accept claims on cracked garlic). Because some perishable items can deteriorate very quickly, we cannot accept any claims beyond the 3-day time frame as it becomes too difficult to determine if these items were delivered in substandard condition, or if they turned into such substandard condition because of having been improperly cared for or stored once delivered.

Smaller than I thought it would be, and I paid more than what I could have spent at tractor supply. But despite that, it's doing well and starting to get taller growing up the trellis. It's only the first year so I can't speak how the fruit tastes and grows. Time will tell. If I could do this over I would have gone for the affordable option and not over paid.
I thought this was going to do really well as soon as i planted it, it started sprouting leaves and looking really well. 2 months later its dead. I was much smaller than I thought it was going to be especially for its price.
Save your money. It's April 15, 2021 today. I received this plant in either late December 2020 or early January 2021 and I was disappointed in the size of the ISSAI KIWI plant. It is no bigger than the plants sold at Lowe's or Tractor Supply that come in the boxes that they sell every year on their display at the beginning of Spring. I could have paid $9.99 at Lowe's without paying $19.99 in shipping for the same size plant. What a rip off. The bamboo stake that was packaged with the plant was about 4 feet tall as well as the box it was shipped in. What an embarrassment. I paid 24.99 plus shipping for a plant that is less than 12 inches high...that came in a box 3 times as big as the plant itself. NEVER AGAIN. The only good thing I can say is it survived the winter in my garage and the leaves started to grow as soon as the plant broke dormancy.
Just wrote a review on figs, great, this, not so much. Followed directions as stated but for some reason this one just looks like it has died. I’m hoping it comes back because it’s still pliable, but right now it’s doing pretty bad. We’ll see and I’ll update later.
Got a pair of these in January and planted them in a large box quickly. They’ve both already started leafing out and have noticeably more growth every day.
