Navaho Blackberry is one live potted, thornless blackberry with an erect growth habit. Its medium-size black berries are firm, flavorful, and well suited to fresh eating, freezing, preserves, and baking. The self-supporting canes take less horizontal space than a trailing blackberry, making Navaho a practical selection for managed hedgerows, smaller gardens, and large containers where careful pruning can keep growth within bounds.

  • Plant form: One live potted Navaho blackberry plant
  • USDA zones: 5–9
  • Chill requirement: Approximately 300–500 hours
  • Fruiting habit: Erect floricane, or summer bearing
  • Pollination: Self-fruitful; no companion cultivar is required
  • Canes: Thornless and erect, with light support recommended

Provide full sun and fertile soil with reliable drainage. Water the container before planting, ease the root ball from its pot, loosen tightly circling roots, and position the crown at the same depth it grew in the nursery. Keep the soil evenly moist during establishment and berry development while avoiding prolonged saturation. In a permanent container, use a large, deep vessel with generous drainage and monitor moisture more frequently than for an in-ground plant.

Although Navaho is more upright than trailing cultivars, a simple two-wire support keeps fruiting canes organized and protects them during wind or a heavy crop. During summer, tip vigorous first-year primocanes at a manageable height to encourage productive lateral branches. After harvest, remove the second-year floricanes that carried fruit and retain the strongest new primocanes for the next season. Thin weak or crowded stems during dormancy so sunlight and air can reach the center of the planting.

Navaho can produce a crop when planted alone, so a named pollinizer partner is unnecessary. Pollinating insects remain important for complete fruit development; avoid spraying open flowers. Read the blackberry growing guide for pruning and support guidance, and visit the berry plant collection to compare erect, trailing, thorned, and thornless choices. Ripening time depends on climate and seasonal weather.

Guarantee

We guarantee the perishable items we sell to be in good, viable condition when we sell them. Perishable items include, but are not limited to, garlic bulbs, flower bulbs, seed potatoes, onion sets & transplants, potted or bare root trees, vegetable crowns, etc. If your perishable item arrives in substandard condition, take photographs and please contact us within 3 days of the purchase date (or delivery date) and we will provide you with a refund of the purchase price (excluding shipping costs), or a replacement. Accordingly, we urge you to open any boxes marked as ""Perishable"" immediately upon receiving them and inspect the shipment thoroughly (do not crack open heads of garlic, we do not accept claims on cracked garlic). Because some perishable items can deteriorate very quickly, we cannot accept any claims beyond the 3-day time frame as it becomes too difficult to determine if these items were delivered in substandard condition, or if they turned into such substandard condition because of having been improperly cared for or stored once delivered.
