Valerian Seeds (Organic)
Sleepy Time Plant
Valerian is a classic medicinal herb cherished for its tall white flower clusters and calming effects. Valeriana officinalis has a long history in Western herbalism as a natural sedative used to support restful sleep, ease tension, and promote relaxation. Its fragrant blooms also attract pollinators and lend elegance to herb gardens and cottage-style plantings.
This European wild-type variety is a hardy perennial in USDA Zones 4–8, thriving in full sun to partial shade. It prefers moist, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter, growing vigorously in diverse garden conditions. Plants may reach over 5 feet tall and typically flower in their second year, producing decorative umbels of white blossoms above finely divided foliage.
Start seeds in spring by pressing them gently into the soil surface—do not cover, as light is required for germination. Keep evenly moist until sprouts emerge, usually in 10 to 16 days. Mature valerian leaves are fern-like, though seedlings may appear different early on. Space plants 12 to 24 inches apart for optimal development and airflow.
