Dakota Black Popcorn Corn is a striking heirloom variety celebrated for its rich flavor and unique appearance. Renowned for its exceptional flavor, this popcorn offers a slightly nutty and earthy taste, making it a favorite among gourmet snack enthusiasts. Beyond its culinary appeal, the dramatic coloring adds a touch of elegance to any pantry or table.

This variety thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, reaching an average height of 6-8 feet, making it a stunning addition to any garden. Known for its reliable performance, Dakota Black Popcorn Corn grows sturdy stalks that produce multiple ears per plant, ensuring a bountiful harvest. The ears themselves are compact, typically 4-6 inches long, making them ideal for popping or decorative uses.

Plant Dakota Black Popcorn Corn seeds in warm soil after the danger of frost has passed. Planting & Care

Soil & Water: Corn is a heavy feeder requiring high amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK). Its weak and shallow root system likes loose soil with a high compost content.

Planting & Growing: Sow seeds directly outdoors 1 week after the last frost. You can start earlier by using black or green plastic mulches and floating row covers to obtain optimum conditions. Plant in blocks rather than rows to ensure good germination. To prevent cross-pollination, plant different varieties at least 500'.

Harvesting & Storage: For sweet corn, harvest when part of the silk is brown. For dry corn, harvest when husks are completely dry. To finish the drying process, husk the ears and spread them in a dry, well-ventilated area. Store on the cob, or shuck and store kernels.

Some black, some not

This year was the first that I have grown this. I haven't tried popping any yet because it is still drying. Some of it wasn't black, it had a tinge of black/red on the knurls. We'll see how it pops after it is dried.
