Description

Certified-organic Gupton is a Southern Highbush blueberry with a vigorous, open-upright framework and a relatively narrow crown. It produces medium-to-large, light-blue fruit with very good firmness and flavor during the early-to-midseason window. Compared with the earliest low-chill selections, Gupton flowers somewhat later, which may reduce—but does not eliminate—the chance of freeze injury to open blossoms.

  • Plant form: One certified-organic potted blueberry plant
  • USDA zones: 6–10
  • Chill requirement: Approximately 500 hours
  • Mature size: About 6 feet tall under suitable care, with an open narrow canopy
  • Harvest timing: Early to midseason; local climate determines calendar dates
  • Berry traits: Medium to large, light blue, firm, and flavorful
  • Garden use: Upright fruiting shrub that fits a row without an unusually broad crown

Gupton should be planted with another early- to mid-bloom Southern Highbush cultivar for dependable cross-pollination. Certified-organic Pearl is a practical partner: the two overlap in Zones 6–9, ripen early to midseason, and have similar moderate chill needs of about 450–500 hours. Observing both plants in bloom remains the best local confirmation.

Choose a bed receiving at least six hours of direct sun and prepare it to an acidic pH around 4.5–5.5. The open habit benefits from spacing that allows bees and air to move through the canopy. Spread mulch over the shallow feeder roots, irrigate consistently through fruit development, and prevent water from pooling around the container root ball after transplanting. Delay heavy cropping until the plant is established, then prune out weak interior growth and a portion of the oldest canes during dormancy. Browse additional blueberry plants and use the blueberry planting guide for soil and fertilizer guidance.

Guarantee

We guarantee the perishable items we sell to be in good, viable condition when we sell them. Perishable items include, but are not limited to, garlic bulbs, flower bulbs, seed potatoes, onion sets & transplants, potted or bare root trees, vegetable crowns, etc. If your perishable item arrives in substandard condition, take photographs and please contact us within 3 days of the purchase date (or delivery date) and we will provide you with a refund of the purchase price (excluding shipping costs), or a replacement. Accordingly, we urge you to open any boxes marked as ""Perishable"" immediately upon receiving them and inspect the shipment thoroughly (do not crack open heads of garlic, we do not accept claims on cracked garlic). Because some perishable items can deteriorate very quickly, we cannot accept any claims beyond the 3-day time frame as it becomes too difficult to determine if these items were delivered in substandard condition, or if they turned into such substandard condition because of having been improperly cared for or stored once delivered.
