Natchez is an early-ripening, thornless, erect blackberry released by the University of Arkansas. It produces attractive, very large berries with firm texture and balanced flavor. The 1-gallon nursery plant offered on this page is certified organic.

Training and care

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil and keep the root zone evenly moist. Erect canes benefit from a simple trellis. Tip primocanes in summer to encourage lateral branches, remove spent floricanes after harvest, and maintain an open canopy. In very hot, sunny weather, leaf cover helps reduce sunscald and white-drupe injury on developing fruit.

Establishment and crop renewal

Remove the pot carefully and plant with the crown at its original soil line. Water the entire root ball, then extend irrigation outward as roots spread. Separate current primocanes from fruiting floricanes on the support so spent canes can be removed cleanly after harvest. Pick Natchez berries only when fully dark and easily released; blackberries do not continue ripening after picking. Use shallow containers to limit bruising. Early-season yield depends on winter cane survival, bloom weather, pollinator activity, irrigation, and plant maturity.
