Description

Washington Navel orange is a classic seedless sweet orange with rich flavor, abundant juice, and a thick rind that peels readily by hand. The familiar navel forms at the blossom end, while the segmented flesh makes the fruit especially convenient for fresh eating. It also contributes sweet juice and fragrant zest to salads, baking, sauces, and preserves. In suitable California climates, the crop generally ripens from late fall through winter and may remain on the tree beyond initial maturity when weather stays favorable.

This potted, semi-dwarf citrus performs best in full sun with protection from hard frost and extreme heat during bloom. Use soil that drains promptly and keep the top of the root ball at or just above grade. For container culture, select a sturdy pot with unrestricted drainage and a porous citrus mix. Water thoroughly rather than lightly sprinkling, then allow the upper soil to begin drying. Feed during active growth and prune only as needed to remove crossing, damaged, or badly placed shoots.

Washington Navel sets seedless fruit without a second tree. Its flowers do not provide useful pollen for pollinating other citrus, so choose a different companion if another variety specifically needs cross-pollination.
