Planting & Care

Soil & Water:Amend soil well before sowing with lots of aged manure or compost.

Planting & Growing:Plant only when spring weather is warm and night temperatures stay above 50 degrees. Plant in slightly mounded hills, 2 feet in diameter and 2 feet apart. Plant 5-6 seeds 1" deep and 4" apart. Thin hill seedlings to 2 strongest plants. For row planting, sow in groups of 2-3 seeds, 1" deep and 18" apart in rows 2 feet apart. Thin to strongest plant per group. Protect seedlings from birds.

Harvesting & Storage: Harvest when no more than 2-3" across for best flavor and tenderness. Frequent harvesting keeps plants producing.

Exceptional seed mix

All the Scallop varieties are productive and eye-catching: it's a pleasure to find a mix including the dark green variety. I do not have growing space to compete with larger outfits which sell standard zucchini and yellow squash. It requires planning and effort on a smaller plot to produce high-end "baby squash," and your Patty Pan trio really lights up the mix.

Excellent variety

Ronde de Nice produces attractive fruit, more spherical than Eight-Ball and distinctively striped/mottled. That being said, the seedlings and plants are not as large, as vigorous, nor as productive. The fruits remain tender and flavorful to a large size, and this, with the appearance, keep it a desirable variety for "baby summer squash" mixes.
