Rossa Lunga di Firenze Onion Seeds
Intermediate Day Sweet Mild Red Onion
Rossa Lunga di Firenze onion seeds offer home gardeners and small-scale farmers a beautiful and flavorful heirloom variety with deep roots in Italian culinary tradition. This elongated, red-skinned onion produces tender, mildly sweet bulbs perfect for slicing raw, grilling, or adding depth to savory dishes. With its unique torpedo shape and striking color, it adds both flavor and visual appeal to garden beds and kitchen tables alike.
Best grown in full sun and loose, fertile soil with good drainage, this short-day variety performs well in warmer climates and can be grown as a spring or fall crop in milder regions. It requires consistent moisture and benefits from regular feeding to support healthy bulb development. Though often enjoyed fresh, Rossa Lunga di Firenze also cures well for short-term storage.
Whether you're expanding your heirloom collection, experimenting with Italian garden staples, or simply looking for a reliable, mild onion, this variety offers versatility, resilience, and historical charm. Start indoors or direct sow depending on your region, and expect a productive crop within 90–100 days.

To start indoors, sow 1 inch apart in containers of seed starting mix and cover 1/4 inch deep. Provide a strong light source until 2-3 inches tall. Transplant 4 inches apart, burying crowns 1 inch deep.
Harvesting & Storage: Harvest about mid-summer when sized up and half tops are bent over. Stop watering and bend over remaining tops and lay in the sun for another 7-10 days. Store in cool, airy place. Use soon.

These have always done well for me and are delicious!!
I had a good crop of smaller onions, but they had nice flavor and kept quite well. Very few bolted.
