In my experience Chill Hours are a grey scale, not a hard cut-off. For instance I only get around 150 hours of chill annually here in San Francisco but I can grow Cherries, Pears and Persimmons with no problem. Would I get bigger yields with more chill? Certainly! But our trees still produce enough for our family. So Chill Hours are really important for commercial growers, but for backyard fruit hobbyists – push the boundaries, you might be pleasantly surprised! But if it does not work out, don’t blame the vendor, folks like Grow Organic do great job of educating their customers about best practices.
