Nectarine symptom guide
- Thickened, puckered red or yellow spring leaves: peach leaf curl is likely.
- Brown blossoms, twig blight or rotting fruit: investigate brown rot and compare with frost injury.
- Small leaf holes or fruit lesions: shot hole, bacterial spot or insect feeding may be involved.
- Gum, sunken bark or limb dieback: investigate canker, borer injury, sunburn and physical damage.
- Curled tender growth with honeydew: inspect for aphids.
- Fixed bumps on bark or foliage: inspect for scale.
- Stippling, bronzing or webbing: inspect for spider mites.
- Larvae or gum in shoots and fruit: identify peach twig borer, oriental fruit moth or another regional pest.
Peach leaf curl on nectarines
Symptoms appear after budbreak, but management decisions are generally made before susceptible tissue emerges. Once leaves are distorted, a spray cannot restore them. Protect tree vigor, avoid unnecessary nitrogen and use current local dormant-season recommendations for future prevention.
Brown rot
Brown rot pressure increases with susceptible bloom or fruit tissue, wet weather and wounds. Remove mummified fruit and infected material where recommended, reduce fruit injury and manage canopy density. Fungicide selection and timing must follow the label and regional resistance guidance.
Shot hole, bacterial spot and lookalikes
Leaf holes alone are not diagnostic. Note lesion margins, whether centers drop out, and whether twigs or fruit are affected. Laboratory or Extension diagnosis may be needed before building a spray program.
Cankers, borers and gumming
Gum can accompany insect feeding, infection, sunburn, pruning wounds and water stress. Inspect for frass, entry holes and sunken or discolored bark. Avoid cutting into the trunk or major scaffolds until the cause and extent are understood.
Aphids, scale and mites
Inspect both leaf surfaces and woody tissue with a hand lens. Honeydew can support sooty mold, while mites often cause stippling rather than large spots. Conserve predators and treat only when damage, pest level and timing justify action.
Prevention through tree care
- Select a variety matched to chill, bloom risk and site conditions.
- Plant at the correct depth in well-drained soil and protect the trunk.
- Irrigate from soil-moisture observations rather than a fixed calendar.
- Prune for structure and airflow without exposing bark abruptly to intense sun.
- Thin excessive crops to reduce limb stress and fruit contact.
- Clean up confirmed disease reservoirs as regional guidance recommends.
- Use a pesticide only when the current label lists nectarine and the target. Follow timing, rates, PPE, re-entry, preharvest and mixture directions.
