Why Grow Mulberries?
Mulberries are delicious fruits that resemble long, skinny blackberries and have a rich, raspberry-like flavor. These fruits are great for eating fresh, making jams, or even producing wine. Unlike most fruits, mulberries ripen over a staggered period, providing fresh harvests throughout the summer.
Types of Mulberries
There are three main types of mulberries:
- White Mulberries: Native to China, these were brought to the U.S. for silkworm production. Note that they can be invasive in some areas, so check local regulations before planting.
- Red Mulberries: Native to North America, these are cold-hardy and grow well in zones as low as 3.
- Black Mulberries: Native to Iran, these produce the best-tasting fruit and thrive in warmer climates, typically zones 6-8.
Popular varieties like the Pakistan Mulberry are known for their cold-hardiness (down to zone 4) and excellent flavor.
Planting Mulberry Trees
Mulberries are tolerant of various soil conditions, including alkaline or salty soils, but they thrive in deep loam soil with good drainage. These trees grow quickly, reaching heights of up to 35 feet if left unpruned.
Steps to Plant:
- Soak the bare root tree in water for at least 12 hours before planting to avoid desiccation and frost damage.
- Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the root system comfortably.
- Position the tree in the hole and backfill with soil.

Caring for Mulberry Trees
- Pruning: Minimal pruning is required. Shape the tree in its early years and remove dead or crossing branches. Keep in mind that heavy pruning will reduce fruit production, as mulberries fruit on second-year wood.
- Placement: Avoid planting near driveways or buildings, as falling fruit and bird droppings can create a mess.
Harvesting Mulberries
The best way to harvest mulberries is to lay tarps beneath the tree and collect the ripe fruit as it drops. Birds love mulberries too, but these trees are typically prolific enough to share.
Plant a mulberry tree, enjoy its delicious fruits, and grow organic for life!
