Root Guard Gopher Basket - 1 Gallon (Pack of 2)

Root Guard 1-Gallon Gopher Baskets are formed wire barriers for protecting two small new plantings from root damage by burrowing gophers. Each basket opens to approximately 8 inches in diameter by 9 inches deep and uses 20-gauge steel wire with 3/4-inch hexagonal openings. The wire is hot-dip galvanized after weaving, with galvanized sheet-metal seams, for below-ground durability while roots, water, and soil organisms can pass through the mesh.

Open a basket fully before digging and make the planting hole wide enough that the wire does not fold into the root ball. Add soil inside the bottom to set the plant at its proper depth, then center the roots without compressing them. Backfill gradually on both sides of the mesh so the basket keeps its shape and air pockets are reduced. Leave the green upper edge above grade as directed to discourage gophers from entering over the top. Water deeply to settle the soil and keep mulch away from the crown. The barrier protects the enclosed root zone; continue checking the surrounding area for new tunnels or mounds.
