Video Overview
Types of Strawberries
Strawberries come in three main types:
- June-bearers: Produce a large crop early in summer, perfect for preserving.
- Everbearers: Provide multiple smaller crops for a continuous supply of fresh strawberries.
- Day-neutral: Similar to everbearers but produce regardless of day length.
To enjoy the best of both worlds, plant a combination of June-bearers and everbearers for a continuous and abundant harvest.
Choosing the Right Spot
Strawberries thrive in:
- Full sun (at least 8 hours daily).
- Sandy, loamy soil enriched with organic compost and a balanced organic fertilizer to promote healthy growth.
Planting Strawberries
The Hill System (Everbearers & Day-neutral)
For everbearers and day-neutral varieties:
- Build a raised hill or use a raised bed with rows 3-4 feet wide.
- Plant strawberries 12 inches apart in rows.
- Use red mulching film to prevent weeds and speed up ripening.
The Matted Row System (June-bearers)
For June-bearers:
- Plant in rows 4 feet apart with 2 feet between plants.
- Allow runners to root in empty spaces, maintaining at least 6-inch spacing.
- Keep plants from getting too crowded to avoid diseases like powdery mildew.
Strawberry Care Tips
- Watering: Water immediately after planting to prevent transplant shock. You can also use kelp-based plant nutrients to help roots establish if available.
- Snip Blossoms: Remove the first blooms during the first year to encourage strong root growth.
- Weed Control: Use straw mulch to keep weeds at bay and retain soil moisture.
