How to Maintain Your Irrigation System for a New Season
As late spring signals the start of drier weather, it’s time to prepare your irrigation system for the growing season. Proper maintenance ensures your plants receive consistent water while conserving resources.
Follow these steps to keep your system in top shape.
1. Flush Out the System
- Flush the Lines: Open the ends of your irrigation lines to clear out debris and dirt that may have accumulated during the offseason.
- Clean the Filter: If your system has a filter, open it and clean the screen. Self-cleaning filters may not need this step.
2. Check for Issues
Turn on the irrigation system one section at a time and inspect for:
- Clogged Emitters: Soak emitters with hard water deposits in white vinegar. Replace them if they remain clogged.
- Kinked Tubing or Loose Fittings: Repair or replace damaged parts.
- Water Pressure: Use a pressure gauge to ensure your pressure regulator is functioning properly. High pressure can cause fittings to pop off.
3. Adjust for Plant Growth
- Add Emitters for Trees: As trees grow, their water needs increase. Add emitters to accommodate their expanding root zones.
- Remove Emitters for Drought-Tolerant Plants: Well-established shrubs and trees that no longer require supplemental water can have their emitters removed.
Regular maintenance helps your irrigation system work efficiently, reducing waste and promoting healthy plant growth. Prepare now for a successful growing season!
