Supporting Your Garden: Tips for Plant Supports
Hi, I’m Tricia, an organic gardener. Just like people, plants need a little support to thrive. Whether you’re growing tomatoes, cucumbers, or pole beans, proper plant supports can improve your garden's health and yield. Let’s explore some effective and sustainable ways to provide support for your plants.
Bamboo: A Sustainable and Versatile Support
Bamboo is an excellent choice for garden supports. It’s renewable, strong, affordable, and long-lasting. Here’s how to use bamboo effectively:
-
Building a Bamboo Grid
- Start with 7-foot bamboo stakes and zip ties.
- Use a rubber mallet to sink vertical poles around the perimeter of your bed, spaced 12–18 inches apart.
- Attach horizontal poles parallel to each other, starting 12–18 inches above the bed. Secure them to the vertical poles.
- Add crossbars to create a sturdy grid, securing all intersections with zip ties.
-
Creating a Bamboo Teepee
- Gather 3–4 bamboo stakes, level them, and secure them with a rubber band.
- Wrap twine around the stakes for extra stability.
- Spread the stakes into a teepee shape, perfect for supporting pole beans, peas, or climbing plants.
Hortonova Plastic Trellis: Lightweight and Flexible
For a reusable and UV-stabilized option, consider the Hortonova plastic trellis:
- Horizontal Installation: Supports sprawling plants like cucumbers.
- Vertical Installation: Ideal for climbing vines.
Biodegradable Twine Trellis
If you prefer an eco-friendly option:
- Use a bamboo frame, twine, and ground staples.
- Secure the twine at the top, anchor it with staples, and repeat along the row.
Easy Storage and Reuse
At the end of the season, disassemble bamboo and other supports for storage. This allows you to reuse them next year, saving time and money.
