Professional Soil Tests - (Part 2) Acting On Your Analysis

How to Act on Your Soil Test Results

A soil analysis is an essential tool for optimizing soil health and ensuring your plants thrive. In part two of understanding your soil analysis, we’ll focus on how to use your test results to take action, particularly on organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium levels.

Organic Matter and Cation Exchange Capacity

The percentage of organic matter in your soil influences its structure, drainage, and nutrient-holding capacity. If your organic matter is very high and the cation exchange capacity (CEC) is above 20, hold off on adding more organic material. Instead, let the existing matter break down naturally. For organic matter that’s high but paired with a CEC under 20, consider adding arctic humus or mycorrhizae to facilitate decomposition and nutrient release.

Managing Nitrogen Levels

Nitrogen is critical for plant growth, but excessive amounts can harm your soil and plants.

  • For nitrogen levels below 40 in vegetable gardens, add organic fertilizers like blood meal or fish meal.
  • Use slower-release nitrogen sources like feather meal if organic matter levels are very high.
  • To reduce excess nitrogen, plant heavy feeders such as corn, lettuce, or tomatoes.

Phosphorus for Rooting and Fruiting

Phosphorus supports flowering, fruiting, and root development.

  • For low to medium phosphorus levels, use bone meal or rock phosphate based on the chart in your soil analysis booklet.
  • Avoid adding phosphorus if levels are very high.

Potassium for Plant Vigor

Potassium promotes plant metabolism and overall health.

  • Add sulfate of potash if potassium levels are below 150.
  • For high potassium and a CEC under 20, apply gypsum to balance soil composition.

Final Thoughts

By understanding your soil test results, you can create a tailored fertilization plan that enhances plant health and soil fertility. Refer to your soil analysis booklet for detailed recommendations, and don’t hesitate to consult gardening experts for further guidance.
