Lang Jujube Tree
Tangy jujubes with versatility
The Lang Jujube Tree (Ziziphus jujuba ‘Lang’) is a highly respected jujube variety known for its firm texture, rich flavor when dried, and beautifully pear shaped fruit. The lang jujube fruit begins as medium to large, greenish fruit that matures into a deep reddish-brown Chinese date. While the fruit has a mild sweetness when fresh, it becomes soft, chewy, and richly flavored once fully dried—making it one of the most dependable jujube varieties for long-term storage, baking, teas, and traditional recipes.
Adaptable, durable, and productive, the jujube lang tree is an excellent choice for home gardeners who want a fruit tree that delivers a reliable harvest with minimal upkeep. With its late spring blooming and strong resistance to drought and poor soils, this tree is ideal for tough sites where other fruit trees struggle.
Why Choose the Lang Jujube Tree
A Classic Chinese Date Variety
The lang jujube is prized for producing some of the best dried Chinese date fruit. Once dried, the fruit develops a sweet, rich flavor that is perfect for snacking, baking, or making herbal teas.
Excellent for Drying and Fresh Eating
While the fruit is firmer and less sweet when fresh, it can still be used for fresh eating early in the growing season. As it dries, the texture becomes chewy and candy-like—one reason this jujube lang tree is such a popular choice for preserving and cooking.
Hardy, Low-Maintenance, and Productive
The lang jujube tree thrives in hot, dry climates, tolerates a wide range of soil types, and is naturally drought tolerant once established. It is partially self-fruitful but produces richer, heavier crops when planted with a pollinator such as a Li Jujube.
You can find more pollinator options and compare varieties in our full jujube tree collection.

Growing Requirements
Growing Zones & Climate
The lang jujube fruit tree grows well in USDA zones 5–10. It prefers long, hot summers and low humidity, but it’s hardy enough for colder climates as well.
Check your zone using our What Is My Growing Zone? tool.
Sunlight
The tree must thrive in full sun to support healthy growth and fruit production.
Soil Needs
- Prefers sandy or loamy, well-drained soil
- Tolerates poor and alkaline soils
- For best results, begin with good soil preparation using compost or organic amendments
Watering
Newly planted trees require regular watering until established. After that, the tree becomes strongly drought tolerant, needing only occasional deep watering.
Pollination
The lang jujube tree is partially self-fruitful but performs best with a pollinator such as Li Jujube or Honey Jar. Planting a partner tree improves fruit set and crop size.
Chill Hours
Requires around 100 chill hours for reliable bloom and fruiting.
Harvest Time
Fruit ripens from late August through early fall, offering a long window for fresh use and drying.
Best Regions for Lang Jujube
The jujube lang tree excels in warm areas like California, Arizona, and New Mexico but adapts well across diverse climates within the recommended growing zones. Its ability to handle drought, heat, and poor soils makes it a dependable choice for many gardeners.

Important Dates:
- April 1st Dormant trees/plants must be planted in the ground
- May 15th Perform scratch test, if no new leaves have grown

Terms and Conditions
We cannot guarantee that your tree or plant will remain alive and healthy after it is received, or bear fruit as there are too many variables in your environment that are beyond our control (i.e. soil preparation, weed and pest control, proper irrigation, chill hours, compatible hardiness for your growing zone, proper choice of pollinator, extreme weather, rodent damage, disease, etc.).
We cannot guarantee that we will be able to provide a replacement tree/plant of the same species either that same growing season or in future years. Customers are responsible for all shipping fees associated with replacement trees and plants.
If we determine that the tree you purchased directly from us is not viable, we will issue you a store credit (not a refund) for the purchase price of the affected dormant tree or plant. Shipping is not included in the dormant tree/plant guarantee. Store credits can be used to purchase any product we sell and are valid for use only until July 1st of the following year.
Historically, 98% of our dormant trees and plants grow and thrive when they have been cared for and planted using our growing guides. Dormant trees and plants must be planted in the ground by April 1st in order to be eligible for credit. If the ground in your area is still frozen solid, you may temporarily plant your tree or plant in a pot.
Potted, non-dormant trees or plants are excluded from this guarantee as they are not dormant at the time of shipment. Evergreen trees such as citrus, avocado and olive trees are not available for credit under the Dormant Tree and Plant Guarantee.
Instructions
We guarantee that your dormant fruit tree or plant will leaf out, if you care for it according to our growing guides. In the unlikely event that your dormant tree or plant does not have leaves by May 15th, follow these simple steps to apply for a store credit:
Before you call or email, please perform a “scratch test” to determine if the tree or plant is still alive. This video shows how to check for live tissue under the bark. Scratch tests need to be done a few inches above and below the graft.
Green Cambium Layer / Living Trees
If the cambium layer under the bark is green, give your tree a little more time. It is still alive, but hasn’t come out of dormancy yet. Check to make sure that it is getting the right amount of deep root water, enough sunlight and that the weather is warm enough for that type of tree/plant to come out of dormancy. Every tree has its own personality and will come out of dormancy at different times. Be sure to submit the required documentation listed below by June 15th, if it doesn’t grow leaves.
Brown Cambium Layer / Dead Trees
If the scratch test shows a brown cambium layer or if your dormant tree/plant doesn’t have leaves by June 1st, please email us at helpdesk@groworganic.com. All required documentation listed below must be received by June 15th for your claim to be considered. To be considered for the guarantee claim, all required documentation must be received by June 15th. Incomplete submissions will be denied.
Required Documentation
- Order number
- Name of dormant tree/plant and the quantity affected
- Photos of each tree or plant showing:
- The roots (tree or plant must be pulled out of the ground)
- The scratch test areas
- The entire tree/plant
We reserve the right to not issue credit for items that have already been replaced. We also reserve the right to require photographic evidence that the tree/plant was not killed by root rot, rodent or mechanical damage.

Both plants arrived safely, however, both packages were totally dry which I was very concerned about. I followed the directions that came with the trees when not being able to plant them right away. The trees stayed this way for three to four days. I was happy to see that after the time in the moistened wood shavings they began to come to life. I transferred them to their permanent home and they are thriving!
It has not leafed out yet but arrived at a good time for the mountain west and properly packaged .
More substantial than any of the other tree providers I've tried. They are already growing out of the tree tubes. Very pleased.
I got this tree as a pollinator for my Li tree. The fruits turned out to be tastier than I expected. I’m growing my tree in Southern California, zone 10a. Highly recommend this tree!!
I love my Jujube plant---it has been very happy in my greenhouse so far :)
