Potted Blackberry - Olallie

Mix-and-match 4 or more potted berry plants for free shipping!

Olallie Blackberry is supplied as one live potted plant and grows into a vigorous, thorny trailing caneberry. Glossy black fruit develops a concentrated sweet-tart flavor that suits fresh eating, preserves, pies, cobblers, sauces, and freezing. Its relatively low winter-chill requirement and long canes make Olallie especially useful in mild-winter gardens where a productive blackberry can be trained along a fence or wire trellis.

  • Plant form: One live potted Olallie blackberry plant
  • USDA zones: 6–9
  • Chill requirement: Approximately 100–300 hours
  • Fruiting habit: Trailing floricane, or summer bearing
  • Pollination: Self-fruitful; another blackberry is not necessary
  • Spacing: About 3–5 feet between plants

Plant in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Thoroughly moisten the nursery pot before transplanting, loosen only congested outer roots, and keep the crown level with the surrounding ground. Irrigate deeply through establishment and maintain steady moisture from flowering through harvest without leaving the root zone saturated. In hot inland areas, consistent watering and mulch placed away from the crown help reduce stress and abrupt moisture changes while fruit is sizing.

Olallie requires firm support because its flexible canes naturally trail. Arrange the current season’s fruiting floricanes on one part of the trellis while guiding new primocanes in a different direction. This separation simplifies harvest and prevents accidental removal of next year’s crop. Once picking ends, cut the floricanes that produced berries to the ground, inspect the planting for damaged growth, and secure healthy primocanes along the wires. Gloves and long sleeves make work around the thorny canes more comfortable.

Olallie is self-fruitful and does not need a named pollinizer partner, but protecting bees and other flower visitors supports even berry formation. Use the blackberry growing guide for establishment and pruning details, and compare additional potted choices in the berry plant collection. Harvest dates and crop size will vary with local temperatures, cane management, water, and the age of the planting.

Guarantee

We guarantee the perishable items we sell to be in good, viable condition when we sell them. Perishable items include, but are not limited to, garlic bulbs, flower bulbs, seed potatoes, onion sets & transplants, potted or bare root trees, vegetable crowns, etc. If your perishable item arrives in substandard condition, take photographs and please contact us within 3 days of the purchase date (or delivery date) and we will provide you with a refund of the purchase price (excluding shipping costs), or a replacement. Accordingly, we urge you to open any boxes marked as ""Perishable"" immediately upon receiving them and inspect the shipment thoroughly (do not crack open heads of garlic, we do not accept claims on cracked garlic). Because some perishable items can deteriorate very quickly, we cannot accept any claims beyond the 3-day time frame as it becomes too difficult to determine if these items were delivered in substandard condition, or if they turned into such substandard condition because of having been improperly cared for or stored once delivered.
