Yellow Sweet Clover, Biennial Nitrocoated (lb)
Long Tap Roots Help Break Up Hard Soils
Melilotus officinalis Cool season legume cover crop.
Yellow Sweet Clover (Melilotus officinalis) is a deep-rooted, cool-season biennial legume prized for improving soil structure and nutrient cycling. Its robust taproots penetrate compacted soils, extracting potassium and phosphorus and making them plant-available. Reaching 2–6 feet tall, it germinates in 5–10 days and fixes up to 125 lb/acre of nitrogen with adequate calcium and phosphorus. Ideal for dryland rotations with grain or corn, it also serves as quality forage (not for horses). Best suited for neutral to alkaline loams with 17"+ rainfall, yellow sweet clover tolerates poor soils and cold to 0°F. Use nitrocoated seed—no inoculant needed.
- Application Rate: 0.5-1 lb/1000 sq ft or 12-20 lb/acre
- Inoculant: None needed, is nitrocoated
- Germination: 5-10 Days
- Plant Height: 2 - 6'
- Uses: Often used in rotation with grain or corn and valued for hay. Great for grazing (not suitable for horses). Will fix up to 125 lb of Nitrogen per acre if given adequate Calcium and Phosphorus.
- Facts to Note: Annual sweet white clover (SCL370) is more tolerant of heavy and poorly drained soils, naturalizes along creeks and streams, and is best for the deep South-Texas to Georgia. Biennial yellow withstands drier sites. Both do best on neutral or alkaline loams and require at least 17" of rainfall per season. Tolerates temperatures to 0°F.
Made to order. Minimum order quantity is 50 pounds.

Note to Certified Organic Growers from Manufacturer: Nitro-coated seed is conventionally grown seed that has had an organically accepted seed coating applied to it. The seed itself is conventionally grown, non-GMO, and untreated (no fungicides or insecticide seed treatment applied) prior to coating. The seed coat consists of certified organic powdered limestone, an organically approved binder (glue), and peat peat-based inoculant that is also OMRI-approved and organically accepted. The seed coating is applied in a OMRI-approved process in a separate treatment line that only produces Nitro-coated seeds.

Zone 5B. Several year old seed grew beautifully. Yellow clover is the only cover crop to penetrate hardpan and gravel so far. Roots were 16 plus inches long, cut down at 23 inches of top growth. Lots of organic matter! Love Yellow Clover!
