Marshmallow Seeds (Organic)
Root is Nutritious and Soothing
Grow a classic medicinal herb with certified organic Marshmallow seeds. Althaea officinalis, a member of the Mallow family (Malvaceae), is a herbaceous perennial native to Europe. Valued for centuries in traditional herbalism, its nutrient-rich root has been used for digestive support, immune wellness, and soothing irritated tissues. This adaptable plant adds structure, biomass, and botanical beauty to healing gardens and permaculture systems alike.
Marshmallow thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist, fertile soil. Germination typically occurs in 7–14 days. To encourage strong germination, gently scarify seeds with fine sandpaper before sowing. Sow in spring directly in the garden or start in pots—barely cover with soil, tamp lightly, and keep the surface evenly moist. Mature plants can reach up to 4 feet tall and produce soft green leaves with pale pink hibiscus-like blooms in mid to late summer.
Space plants 18–24 inches apart for best growth. Marshmallow produces significant above- and below-ground biomass, enriching soil structure while attracting pollinators with its blooms. Roots are typically harvested in the plant’s second or third year for herbal use.
This hardy perennial is suitable for USDA Zones 3 to 9 and requires only moderate care once established. A great fit for herbalists, homesteaders, and organic gardeners seeking resilient, multifunctional plants that support both health and soil vitality.
