Planting & Care

Soil & Water: Okra prefers moderately rich soil. Its low water requirements make it an easy plant to grow.

Planting & Growing: Okra is heat loving. Sow seeds outside in spring after all danger of frost has passed, when the soil temperature has reached 70F. It's a good succession plant after early, spring-maturing crops. Expect good yields on this 4'-tall, bushy plant.

Harvesting & Storage: Pick okra pods when they are 2"-3" long for tenderness. They are best tasting when eaten the same day. Some people develop a contact dermatitis while handling okra; avoid the itchiness by wearing a long-sleeved shirt and gloves.

Beautiful

A gorgeous plant, unfortunately it didn't seem to like my garden. It grew but did not fruit much. We have very rocky soil and a short growing season so those are probably the culprits.

Can't wait to grow these

I'm so excited to see how the finished harvest will look! These plants grow quickly and they really do well in the heat!

Disappointed but not through

Of the six plants that I tried to start through direct sowing, only one germinated. It is doing well, however. I will try again this weekend and hope for better results.

Beautiful & tasty!

I had excellent results with these okra seeds. The plant is beautiful in the garden, and this year I'm also using it ornamentally. The okra itself is delicious.

Okra Beauty

Although the red okra turns to green when cooked, I am looking forward to the beautiful color it will bring to the garden! Just a stunner set against is green background! The best is when its cooked and eaten. Okra is an exceptionally great choice for its low glycemic index. All around beauty when its growing, and 'good for you' when its oven roasted and eaten!
