Fast Growing Summer Cover Crop
Fagopyrum esculentum Warm season cover crop
Non-legume broadleaf does not fix Nitrogen but is one of the best hot weather cover crops because of its ability to produce organic matter and smother summer weeds (Canada Thistle, Quackgrass, Nutgrass, etc) quickly. Also accumulates insoluble phosphorus and, when turned under, releases it to the soil in plant-available form.
- Application Rate: 3 lb/1000 sq ft or 60-80 lb/acre
- Inoculant: None needed
- Germination: 5-10 Days
- Plant Height: 8" - 3'
- Days to Maturity: 30-45
- Uses: Planted early, it is an excellent trap crop for thrips during bloom of fruits and vines. Also attracts beneficial insects. Weed competition, accumulates phosphorus for later release.
- Facts to Note: Grows on almost any soil with little assistance, but absolutely requires warmth. Quick to mature, so 2 to 4 plantings can be sown in one summer. Mature height varies with soil quality.

Not many of the seeds germinated. They didn't choke out the weeds. They are just now starting to bloom.
I love this fast growing cover crop, both for what it adds to the soil and the food that it provides for the bees.
Delivered just a few days after ordering and within ten days I had buckwheat coming up! Great cover crop for the hot summer days here in the Southeast, and the it grows in very poor clay soil. This is the second cover crop this summer and the soil is looking much better!
Great cover crop
We always plant this buckwheat in patches near our garden and I'm always amazed at the number of insects that come to visit! It looks great and grows really fast! When it's about to go to seed, I cut it down and use it as mulch. Really outcompetes the weeds too!
