Organic Buckwheat Seed (lb)

Fast-Growing Warm Weather Cover Crop

Fagopyrum esculentum – USDA Certified Organic

This USDA Certified Organic Buckwheat seed is an ideal warm-weather cover crop for spring and summer planting. A fast-maturing, non-legume broadleaf, buckwheat seed quickly germinates to produce biomass and suppress weeds like Canada thistle, quackgrass, and nutgrass. It thrives in most soils with minimal input and matures in just 30–45 days, allowing for 2 to 4 plantings in a single season.

While it doesn’t fix nitrogen, buckwheat plays an important role in nutrient cycling. It scavenges insoluble phosphorus and makes it available to future crops after incorporation, making it a valuable addition to sustainable, regenerative farming practices.

When planted early, cover crop buckwheat also acts as a trap crop for thrips and attracts beneficial insects and pollinators.

Key Features:

  • Rapid Growth: Establishes quickly, blooming within 35–40 days, and can be incorporated into the soil shortly thereafter.
  • Weed Suppression: Forms a dense canopy that effectively smothers weeds like Canada thistle, quackgrass, and nutgrass.
  • Phosphorus Accumulation: Efficiently scavenges insoluble phosphorus, converting it into forms more accessible to subsequent crops.
  • Beneficial Insect Attraction: Abundant blossoms attract pollinators and beneficial insects, including hoverflies and parasitic wasps.
  • Soil Improvement: Enhances soil structure and fertility, with residues breaking down quickly to add organic matter.

Application Guidelines:

  • Seeding Rate: 3 lb per 1,000 sq ft or 60–80 lb per acre.
  • Planting Depth: Sow seeds 0.5–1.5 inches deep into a firm, weed-free seedbed.
  • Germination: Occurs within 3–5 days under warm soil conditions.
  • Growth Cycle: Matures in 30–45 days, allowing for multiple plantings in a single season.

Usage Tips:

  • Timing: Plant after the last frost when soil temperatures are consistently warm.
  • Incorporation: For green manure benefits, till under at flowering stage to prevent seed set and volunteer growth.
  • Crop Rotation: Ideal for short rotations between main crops, enhancing soil health and reducing pest pressures.

buckwheat

Not many of the seeds germinated. They didn't choke out the weeds. They are just now starting to bloom.

Great cover crop

I love this fast growing cover crop, both for what it adds to the soil and the food that it provides for the bees.

Fast cover crop for poor soil

Delivered just a few days after ordering and within ten days I had buckwheat coming up! Great cover crop for the hot summer days here in the Southeast, and the it grows in very poor clay soil. This is the second cover crop this summer and the soil is looking much better!

Great choice for planting near our garden

We always plant this buckwheat in patches near our garden and I'm always amazed at the number of insects that come to visit! It looks great and grows really fast! When it's about to go to seed, I cut it down and use it as mulch. Really outcompetes the weeds too!
