Organic Buckwheat Seed (lb)

Fast-Growing Warm Weather Cover Crop

Organic Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) is a fast-growing, warm-season cover crop ideal for improving soil health, suppressing weeds, and attracting beneficial insects. Highly valued by gardeners and small-scale farmers, buckwheat establishes quickly, forming a dense canopy that shades out weeds and protects the soil surface. Its fine, fibrous roots help loosen compacted soil, while its ability to scavenge phosphorus makes it an excellent nutrient recycler. In bloom, buckwheat’s delicate white flowers provide abundant nectar and pollen, drawing pollinators and other beneficial insects to your garden or field.

Best planted in late spring or early summer once soil temperatures reach 60°F or warmer, buckwheat thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, but is adaptable to lower fertility conditions. Mow or incorporate the crop at first bloom to prevent reseeding and to return organic matter to the soil. Its rapid growth cycle allows for multiple plantings in a single season, making it a practical choice for improving soil between cash crops or resting garden beds.

Use buckwheat to enhance soil biology, improve structure, and build fertility naturally. Whether as a short-term green manure, pollinator forage, or part of a larger crop rotation, it supports regenerative farming practices and long-term soil vitality.

buckwheat

Not many of the seeds germinated. They didn't choke out the weeds. They are just now starting to bloom.

Great cover crop

I love this fast growing cover crop, both for what it adds to the soil and the food that it provides for the bees.

Fast cover crop for poor soil

Delivered just a few days after ordering and within ten days I had buckwheat coming up! Great cover crop for the hot summer days here in the Southeast, and the it grows in very poor clay soil. This is the second cover crop this summer and the soil is looking much better!
