American Flag Leek Seeds (Organic)
American Flag Leek Seeds (Organic)
Mild onion flavor, tender stalks.
American Flag Leek is a classic heirloom variety treasured for its thick, tender stalks and mild, sweet onion flavor. This versatile vegetable adds depth and aroma to soups, stews, and sautés while serving as a milder alternative to traditional onions. Growing up to 12-15 inches tall, these leeks thrive in full sun and nutrient-rich, well-draining soil. They require a long growing season of about 120 days, making them ideal for fall or overwintering harvests in cooler climates. Known for their cold-hardiness, American Flag Leeks perform exceptionally well in extended seasons and can even withstand frost. The plants have a compact, upright growth habit, making them suitable for small gardens or interplanting with other crops. With their easy cultivation, long harvest window, and delicious flavor, American Flag Leeks are a must-have addition to any vegetable garden, offering a gourmet touch to your culinary creations.
Leek - American Flag - Allium ampeloprasum

Did You Know? The leek is an ancient national symbol of Wales. In fact, a leek is the cap badge of the Welsh Guards, an infantry division of the British Army.
Soil and Water: Leeks prefer well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Keeping the stems covered with loose soil will keep them bright white.
Planting and Growing: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Thin seedlings when transplanting and plant 6" apart about 2 weeks before last frost. Mulch heavily in cold climates. Leeks overwinter well in milder climates.
Harvesting and Storage: Use fresh. If heavily mulched over the winter leeks can be harvested as needed.

Grew well if direct sown in Zone 9a! Taste amazing in soup.
Onions' milder cousins are perfect for me since onions often trigger migraines (sadly, as I do love their flavor), but leeks seem to be a safer option. These American Flag leeks grew well, are hardy, and were tasty cooked in a variety of ways. I use both the white parts and the greens, though often separately. I tend to use the white part more as I would use onions, but use the green parts either sautéed as "greens" (they taste a bit like asparagus) or as a vegetable in soups or stir-fry.
These came up really nice. Thinned them out and they get big! First time with leeks and these grew great.
I'm trying these in 5 gal pails, so as they grow, I can heap soil up the stalk for blanching. If the winter turns severe in zone 8b, a light plastic cover should protect them adequately.
