When it comes to growing organic carrots, the Scarlet Nantes variety stands out as a top choice for both home gardeners and small-scale organic farmers. These seeds offer a reliable and rewarding growing experience.
Appearance and Growth Characteristics
The Scarlet Nantes carrot is renowned for its attractive, uniform roots. These carrots typically grow to about 6-7 inches in length, boasting a cylindrical shape that is slightly tapered at the ends. One of the defining features of this variety is its vibrant orange color, which is more intense compared to many other carrot varieties. This rich hue is not just visually appealing but also indicative of its high beta-carotene content, which is a precursor to vitamin A.
In terms of growth, the Scarlet Nantes carrot is well-suited for organic gardening. It is a hardy variety that performs well in a variety of soil types, provided the soil is loose and well-drained. This carrot variety has a relatively short growing period of approximately 65-75 days from sowing to harvest, making it an excellent choice for gardeners looking to achieve multiple harvests within a single growing season.
Taste and Culinary Uses
One of the standout qualities of the Scarlet Nantes carrot is its taste. These carrots are known for their sweet, crisp, and tender texture, which sets them apart from many other carrot varieties. The sweetness of the Scarlet Nantes makes it a favorite for fresh eating, either straight from the garden or in salads. The tender texture also makes it ideal for juicing, providing a smooth and flavorful carrot juice.
When compared to other carrot varieties, the Scarlet Nantes is often praised for its superior flavor profile. While many other carrots can be woody or have a bitter aftertaste, the Scarlet Nantes maintains a consistent sweetness and tenderness, even when grown in less-than-ideal conditions. This makes it a versatile choice for a wide range of culinary applications, from raw snacks to cooked dishes.
Benefits of Organic Scarlet Nantes Carrots
Growing Scarlet Nantes carrots organically offers several benefits. Organic growing practices ensure that the carrots are free from synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, resulting in a healthier and more environmentally friendly product. Additionally, organic farming practices promote soil health and biodiversity, contributing to a more sustainable agricultural system.
For gardeners interested in organic methods, Scarlet Nantes seeds are an excellent choice. These seeds are certified organic, ensuring that they have been produced without the use of synthetic chemicals and meet strict organic standards.
Comparisons to Other Carrot Varieties
When comparing the Scarlet Nantes to other carrot varieties, several key differences emerge. For instance, the Danvers carrot, another popular variety, tends to be longer and more tapered, with a slightly earthier taste and a firmer texture. The Imperator variety, commonly found in supermarkets, is known for its length and uniformity but often lacks the sweetness and tenderness of the Scarlet Nantes.
In contrast, the Scarlet Nantes strikes a balance between sweetness and texture, making it more versatile for various culinary uses. Its shorter, more uniform shape also makes it easier to harvest and prepare, particularly for home gardeners who may not have specialized equipment.
The Scarlet Nantes carrot is an exceptional choice for organic gardeners seeking a reliable, flavorful, and visually appealing variety. Its sweet taste, tender texture, and vibrant color make it a standout in both the garden and the kitchen. Compared to other carrot varieties, the Scarlet Nantes offers a unique combination of characteristics that make it a favorite among both gardeners and cooks. Whether you're growing them for fresh eating, juicing, or cooking, Scarlet Nantes carrots are sure to delight with their superior quality and organic integrity.

Soil & Water: Carrots prefer light, deeply tilled soils with plenty of added organic matter, good drainage, a pH range of 6.0-6.6, and regular water. Apply a mulch layer once established to keep roots cool.
Planting & Growing: Seed directly into 75°F soil for quick germination. Mix the small seeds with dry coffee grounds or sand to improve seed distribution. Over planting requires thinning to provide sufficient growing room.
Harvesting & Storage: You may need to loosen soil to pull carrots without breaking off tops. Trim off foliage to extend storage time. Layer roots in a container with damp medium and store in cool, moist conditions. Also good for canning or freezing.

One thing to remember is the ph of soil is lower for carrots. 6.0 to 6.6. Being careful to keep moist and mulched helps plus thinning.
Love this variety, they're sooo sweet!
Love these Scarlet Nantes carrots! They always grow well for us, and the carrots are so sweet.
I planted these in direct soil about 9 days ago. I am in Zone 9b. They were the last to germinate of my beets, kale and collards, but...they did germinate and yesterday little green shoots popped up! Yay! I will review again once harvest is ready! I am a first time gardener and all the seeds I have bought from Peaceful Valley have produced. Spring planting was tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash and basil. All very delicious!
I ordered late so we'll try them later. Fast shipping, we'll packed, delivered quickly.

I bought these seeds to go in bundles of packets of vegetable seeds that I will put in the Blessing Box at a church here in town about late January so people who need to can supplement the groceries they buy with a garden. I'm sure they will love them. If my budget stretches that far, I will get some for myself and let you know how I like them. I still have eight bundles worth of packets of seeds to purchase for them first, though.
Appreciate that you have this in bulk quantities. We use this as a rooting hormone and as a potting mix and soil supplement. Kelp meal is rich in minerals and micro-nutrients and contains growth hormones that support healthy root growth.
Helps me keep the ants down on my property. Place outside and keeps ants down even in your house.
I grow flats of this for my pet pigs, because of the high nutritional content. They love it. I find them waiting at the growing location every afternoon waiting for their fave. I've grown beautiful flats of pea sprouts and alfalfa for them too, but they turn up their snouts and walk away.
Top notch fertilizer and great store
