Packet weights and seed counts vary by crop and lot, so use the current listing whenever it provides an approximate count.
Shop vegetable seeds, herb seeds, or flower seeds only after mapping the space. Bulk seed can be useful for long rows and repeated sowings, but it is not automatically the economical choice if much of it will remain unused.
Method 1: Calculate from final plant spacing
- Measure usable row length in inches.
- Divide by final spacing in inches.
- Multiply by the number of rows.
- Add plants needed for later succession sowings.
- Adjust the seed count for the sowing method and expected field establishment.
Example: a 10-foot row is 120 inches. At 6-inch final spacing, it holds about 20 plants. Two successions require about 40 final plants. If you sow extra for thinning, calculate that separately instead of assuming every seed becomes a harvestable plant.
Method 2: Calculate transplants
For tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, brassicas, and other transplanted crops, start with the number of garden positions. Add only a reasonable number of backup cells. Sowing several seeds in every cell can require extensive thinning and may waste seed when the lot is fresh and conditions are controlled.
Method 3: Plan dense sowings by area
Baby greens, broadcast flowers, and some herbs are planned by area or row rather than individual mature plants. Follow the specific packet rate because seed size and intended density vary widely. Do not substitute an agricultural pounds-per-acre rate for a home-garden packet without converting both area and units carefully.

- Germination and storage: Older or poorly stored seed may have reduced viability. Run a small germination test rather than guessing.
- Field establishment: Crusting, pests, moisture, temperature, and sowing depth affect emergence outdoors.
- Thinning: Carrots, beets, lettuce, and flowers may be sown closer than final spacing.
- Succession planting: Repeated sowings require the total quantity to be divided across dates.

How do I plan mixed flower seed?
Use the packet's area-based rate because species composition and seed size differ among mixes. Prepare the stated area and avoid thinning a mix using vegetable-spacing assumptions.
Does one seed equal one plant?
Not always. Germination and field establishment are less than 100 percent, while beet seed structures can produce multiple seedlings.
When is bulk seed appropriate?
