Apricot Tree Pests and Diseases: Symptoms and Prevention

Apricots bloom early and can be sensitive to spring weather, wet-season diseases, bark injury and regional insect pests. Begin with the affected plant part and symptom pattern; frost, irrigation stress and disease can produce similar dieback.

Apricot symptom guide

  • Brown flowers, twig dieback or rotting fruit: investigate brown rot, but compare symptoms with frost injury.
  • Small leaf holes with colored margins: consider shot hole disease or insect feeding.
  • Sunken bark, gum and branch dieback: bacterial canker, borers, mechanical injury and other stresses are possible.
  • Wilting with wet soil or root discoloration: investigate drainage and root or crown disease.
  • Curled shoots and honeydew: inspect for aphids.

Brown rot

Brown rot can infect blossoms, shoots and fruit. Remove mummified fruit and diseased material where locally recommended, reduce fruit wounds and unnecessary wetting, and maintain an open but sun-safe canopy. Preventive fungicide programs depend on bloom stage, weather, regional resistance concerns and the current label.

Shot hole disease

Shot hole begins as small lesions on leaves and may also affect buds, twigs and fruit. Because insects can make similar holes, inspect the margins and surrounding tissue. Regional programs may emphasize sanitation and preventive applications during specific dormant or wet-weather periods.

Bacterial canker and gumming

Gum is a stress response, not a diagnosis. Examine the bark beneath and around it, note whether a canker is enlarging, and check for borer frass or physical wounds. Avoid unnecessary trunk injury, poor drainage and incorrect pruning timing. Seek local diagnosis before cutting major limbs.

Root and crown problems

Apricots require drainage appropriate to the rootstock and soil. Chronic saturation can produce yellowing, weak growth and decline. Check planting depth, irrigation distribution and the root flare before applying fertilizer or a pesticide.

Insect and mite management

Use a hand lens, traps or local phenology guidance to identify the pest and susceptible life stage. Protect beneficial insects and avoid routine broad-spectrum treatment. Dormant oils, microbial products and other controls are not interchangeable; use one only when the label lists apricot and the target pest.

  1. Choose a site with suitable chill, bloom risk and drainage.
