Apricot trees can be raised from seed, grafted, or budded, but these methods do not produce the same result. A seedling is genetically unique. Grafting or budding joins a known apricot variety to a compatible rootstock and is the usual way to preserve named-variety traits. For most home orchards, planting a nursery-grown bare root apricot tree is the most direct route to predictable fruit.

Growing an apricot tree from seed
Apricot pits contain the seed. Seedlings are worthwhile projects, but they should not be presented as copies of the fruit they came from. Even a seed from an excellent apricot can produce a tree with very different fruit or climate requirements.
- Clean the pit. Remove all fruit residue and discard damaged or moldy pits.
- Provide cold, moist conditions. Apricot seed dormancy commonly requires stratification. Conditions and duration vary, so inspect seeds periodically rather than relying on one guaranteed timetable.
- Plant after the chilling period. Use a well-drained medium, keep it evenly moist rather than saturated, and protect the emerging seedling from temperature extremes.
- Label the seedling. Record the parent fruit and starting date, but treat the resulting tree as an unnamed seedling.
Cracking a pit can damage the kernel and exposes a seed that contains naturally occurring compounds that should not be eaten. Seed starting is optional; an intact pit can also be stratified.
How grafting preserves an apricot variety
Grafting aligns the cambium of a dormant apricot scion with compatible rootstock. Whip-and-tongue grafting is commonly considered when stock and scion are similar in diameter; cleft grafting may be used when the stock is larger. Timing, compatibility, clean cuts, secure wrapping, and protection from drying all affect success.

Budding apricots
T-budding is performed when bark separates readily from the wood; chip budding does not depend on slipping bark in the same way. When a bare root nursery tree is the better choice
Choose a grafted nursery tree when you want a known variety, stated chill requirement, expected harvest season, and documented pollination information. Plant it while dormant, keep its roots protected from drying, and leave the graft union above the finished soil line.
