Organic Lawn Care

This video introduces soil-conscious ways to establish and maintain permanent turf. It is a lawn-care resource, not a seasonal cover-crop guide.

Choose turf for the site

Match the grass species or mixture to the climate, sun exposure, intended use, and available irrigation. A locally appropriate lawn typically performs better than one selected only for appearance. Browse current grass seed and review each product’s planting and climate guidance.

Prepare and maintain the soil

  • Test before amending. A soil test can help identify pH or nutrient limitations before fertilizer is applied.
  • Use compost carefully. A thin, screened topdressing may contribute organic matter, but excessive or poorly finished compost can smother turf or introduce weeds.
  • Water according to soil and grass needs. Established turf often benefits from deeper, less frequent irrigation than new seed, but scheduling must reflect weather, rooting depth, soil texture, and local restrictions.
  • Mow at the appropriate height. Avoid removing more leaf tissue than the grass can recover from readily, and keep mower blades sharp.

Understand clover in lawn mixtures

Some lawn mixtures include compatible clovers. When effective root nodules form with the correct rhizobia, clover can fix atmospheric nitrogen. That does not guarantee that all of the nitrogen immediately becomes available to the surrounding grass or eliminates the need for soil testing and nutrient management. Check whether the selected seed is raw, inoculated, or coated and follow the current product instructions.

Repair bare areas

Correct the cause of thinning before reseeding. Compaction, shade, poor irrigation coverage, pet traffic, disease, unsuitable grass, and soil problems can all create recurring bare spots. Loosen the surface appropriately, sow at the listed rate, establish good seed-to-soil contact, and keep the seedbed consistently moist during germination.
