Potted Blackberry - Baby Cakes

For container growing, select a roomy vessel with generous drainage holes and use a high-quality, freely draining planting mix. Container roots experience faster temperature changes than roots in the ground, so protect the pot from repeated freezing and thawing in cold-winter areas and from severe root-zone heat in hot climates.

In a garden bed, preserve the nursery crown depth and choose fertile soil that drains well. The short canes are easier to manage than full-size blackberries, but a modest support can help under a heavy fruit load. After the summer harvest, remove dead second-year floricanes while retaining healthy new canes. Those primocanes may carry a fall crop and can also contribute to the following summer. Thin damaged or crowded growth during dormancy instead of cutting the entire plant down automatically.
