Description
Baby Cakes Blackberry is supplied as one live potted plant with a compact, rounded habit designed for patios, raised beds, and smaller edible gardens. The thornless canes generally reach about 3–4 feet tall and produce large, classically flavored blackberries. A main crop develops on second-year canes in summer, and many regions can also receive a later crop from new primocanes when heat and the length of the season allow.
- Plant form: One live potted compact blackberry plant
- USDA zones: 4–8
- Chill requirement: Approximately 400 hours
- Fruiting habit: Summer floricane crop with possible fall primocane fruit
- Pollination: Self-fruitful; another blackberry is not required
- Mature size: About 3–4 feet tall with a rounded form
For container growing, select a roomy vessel with generous drainage holes and use a high-quality, freely draining planting mix. Place it in full sun, water thoroughly when the upper layer begins to dry, and monitor moisture closely during flowering and fruit fill. Do not leave the root ball standing in water. Container roots experience faster temperature changes than roots in the ground, so protect the pot from repeated freezing and thawing in cold-winter areas and from severe root-zone heat in hot climates.
In a garden bed, preserve the nursery crown depth and choose fertile soil that drains well. The short canes are easier to manage than full-size blackberries, but a modest support can help under a heavy fruit load. After the summer harvest, remove dead second-year floricanes while retaining healthy new canes. Those primocanes may carry a fall crop and can also contribute to the following summer. Thin damaged or crowded growth during dormancy instead of cutting the entire plant down automatically.
Baby Cakes can set a crop alone, so a named pollinizer partner is unnecessary; pollinating insects still improve berry development. Review the blackberry growing guide for care and pruning principles, and explore the berry plant collection when combining compact and full-size selections with different harvest dates.

We guarantee the perishable items we sell to be in good, viable condition when we sell them. Perishable items include, but are not limited to, garlic bulbs, flower bulbs, seed potatoes, onion sets & transplants, potted or bare root trees, vegetable crowns, etc. If your perishable item arrives in substandard condition, take photographs and please contact us within 3 days of the purchase date (or delivery date) and we will provide you with a refund of the purchase price (excluding shipping costs), or a replacement. Accordingly, we urge you to open any boxes marked as ""Perishable"" immediately upon receiving them and inspect the shipment thoroughly (do not crack open heads of garlic, we do not accept claims on cracked garlic). Because some perishable items can deteriorate very quickly, we cannot accept any claims beyond the 3-day time frame as it becomes too difficult to determine if these items were delivered in substandard condition, or if they turned into such substandard condition because of having been improperly cared for or stored once delivered.

I love blackberries but only want to keep a compact plant. This award-winning babycake is a must have, cute as it’s name! The plant came in very healthy condition and now in full bloom 1st season growing it wow! and very fun to watch they turn into blackberries. Highly recommend it and do get it from GrowOrganic for a high quality plant! :)
I was concerned about the plant’s condition upon arrival as it was being shipped to Massachusetts. It arrived in perfect condition. It even had flowers on it which are now immature berries. Love this plant
I have gardened for donkey’s years now, so I’ve ordered lots of plants over those years. I have never received plants in such great condition, or so carefully packed. These Babycakes have been in their planters all winter now, and are just beginning to swell buds (I’m in zone 7 - TN). Can’t wait. I have received several other items from you including blueberries, figs, and fruit trees. Always in beautiful condition, perfectly shipped. Than likely you so much!
This is a nice, healthy, sturdy plant in great condition. I can't wait to harvest the berries! I potted it in a blueberry pot.
Very nice healthy looking plant. Potted it up immediately to a 5 gallon container. Adding it to my back porch berry collection for easy kitchen access!
